They (Axanar) really screwed over future fan films for others for whatever they did to pissoff CBS/Paramount... :/

It was the reason quality fan films like Star Trek: Continues, had to end sooner because they predicted the gavel was gonna come down hard from the copyright gods...

To be fair Star Trek: Continues would have shut down either way, even if the Axanar debacle didn't occur, the guy who played Kirk in it managed to piss off Shatner by using his image to promote the project without his consent and last I heard he had a case thrown out in court after he sued 2 women for defamation after they accused him of sexual harassment and more skeletons ended up coming out of the closet as a result of said suit. Grant Imahara passing probably would have done it in too.

Shame about axanar, effects looked good.

Actually, the Vic Mignogna lawsuit is under appeal. Because of the CCP virus its been delay.

Yeah but the Shatner kerfuffle happened a little after it ended, basically Mignogna tried to say Shatner taught him to be Kirk and used a photo of them together to fund more ST: C, long story short Shatner found out and was really pissed about.

The latest controversy probably wouldn't have had any impact since ST: C was already dead by then, but it probably killed any chance of it ever having any form of one off episode, while CBS squashed Axanar I do recall them going easy on fan projects as long as said fans don't try to profit from said project, I could be wrong, but there are trek fan projects still under development, albeit not as flashy.

Shatner seems like an ass as a person. He's a decent to good actor & has had some iconic roles, & portrayed them well, but seems pretentious at least in this limited context.

he's a decent actor but as a person unfortunately he is. The sad thing is he seems to delight in having personal beef with those who have worked in the world of trek if i recall correctly he made a young wil wheaton almost cry at one point

In basic terms, they tried to profit off it and that incurred the wrath of CBS. I heard of one incident where they tried to license the Axanar logo, which was clearly displaying the starfleet delta, to a brand of coffee to generate money for the project.

It doesn't take long for CBS to get wind of stuff like this.

It's kinda of a shame a lot of people are holding this whole mess against CBS, though. Argue about the letter of the law all you want (and I have my own gripes about it), but the spirit of IP law is precisely to prevent this sort of thing: people using other's creations to turn a profit without permission. CBS isn't one of those companies with lawyers chomping at the bit to sue some third grader for their fanart video; before this whole mess, they more or less didn't care at all about fan trek.

Then along comes the Axanar team talking about how they're going to be the best Star Trek ever with their big name actors and their real studio and all this money and they start selling merchandise to make money. . .off someone else's IP, that they never actually asked to use because "fan projects" are perfectly allowable.
