I've run into similar issues on older games, usually where the CPU is simply processing things far too fast for the game engine.

I don't know if this is the issue you're experiencing but try to limit the frame rate using software such as MSI Afterburner or NVidia GeForce Control Panel/Experience.

So i took a different approach to your advice and looked in my control panel, found that VSync was forced on. I'm guessing since bridge commander doesn't have a VSync option that it wasn't designed to sync up the frames to the monitor. So I turned it off. Not like you're gonna get horrible screen tear playing this anywho.

And now it works. I should've looked into this sooner, but nevertheless I really appreciate the help. you guys should totally add this to your installation instructions. vsync seems so harmless even in older games that people probably never consider it a factor.

VSync is personally not something I'd recommend enabling system-wide anyway as I've know it to cause input lag, and only enable it on a case-by-case basis for each game if I experience tearing with it.

I've recently picked up an eBay copy of Bridge Commander, looking to enjoy an old classic that I used to while my days away. Unfortunately I'm having a very similar issue to the above, where the game camera pans (in the bridge) at high FPS but the characters and the exterior of the ships constantly stutter. I'm on a Windows 10 Machine with a Nvidia 1070 GTX so just a tad higher than the recommended specs.

I've tried disabling v-sync through the Nvidia control panel and setting only one core to the game through the control panel but this has unfortunately not helped matters. Does anyone have any other suggestions to try to get this game working on Windows 10?

Personally I use Rivatuner Statistics Server to cap the framerate of my running applications.

Hello,

I've recently decided to give Star Trek Bridge Commander another go after many years (now installed on Windows 10).
However when I start the .exe the screen goes black (it does change the resolution) and I get a bunch of error messages telling me that these files are "either not designed to run on Windows or contains an error":

I also tried running the .exe As Administrator and turning on Compatibility mode (Windows XP Service Pack 3), but the errors still come.
I did mange to get into the game on 2 occasions, although I still got the errors and have not been able to reproduce whatever caused it to load on those 2 occasions.

Am I missing a library that I need to install for STBC to run or something?
I'm running Parallels Desktop 15 (v15.1.4) on an iMac (Retina 27-inch, Late 2015) using macOS Catalina (10.15.6).

Any help would be much appreciated.

Did you install the version of DirectX that came with the installer? but I'm guessing you're trying to run it through a Windows emulator similar to Wine (Linux)

I don't have the installer anymore after I switched to Mac many years ago.
What I did was copy a backup of the whole install over to my virtual Windows (running on Mac via Parallels).

What version on DirectX would you recommend I install?

If DirectX is really what's causing the errors, then why was I able to get into the game on those 2 occasions without changing anything?
When I did get into the game it worked fine (except for those same errors that I still got while launching), but I wasn't able to reliably reproduce getting back in past the errors.

Well to give you an idea, I could start up Birth of the Federation on windows 10 but when I tried to play, the cursor would flash like mad and streak over the screen .

It wasn't until I installed the version that came with the game did it work as it was meant too. My guess is that there are elements from say the older versions or similar files but they're not exactly what the game was expecting so it would throw up graphical glitches but still run.

I'm not sure what version came with bridge commander, I know XP and 7 went up to DX 9.0c but it could be anything.

I'm not sure if it could be partly the emulator as well? I know some don't necessarily play well with older games or games in general but I have no experience with macs or that software so I couldn't really say there.

This came from a google search and from a site called Trek core

"What version of DirectX does Bridge Commander require? The minimum requirement is DirectX 7 but it will obviously function with later versions of DirectX. 9."
