I'm wondering who will take over as 1st Officer now though.
There's a mixture of possible candidates tbh.
I think the obvious one is Lt. Nilsson as although she's not exactly well known she always seems to have control of the bridge when everyone else is away so definitely has the experience.
Detmer clearly has big issues so would be a bad choice right now. Now of the other bridge crew seem to have any command experience or characteristics needed for command.
Maybe the 32C security lady will be moved to that position if the admiral thinks DSC needs someone on the bridge he's familiar with.
The one crew member I think is definitely command material is Lt. Cmdr Culber; but he's sort of stuck in sickbay. Mind you that never stopped McCoy being on the bridge for much of the TOS/TMP era.

I think that Nilssen would be a good choice in a 'sorry we screwed over your other character' kind of way but I can't see them promoting her twice up to Commander. Which brings me to the other issue I have.
Burnham is a full Commander so outranks every character apart from Saru and Jett Reno (who is hardly ever on the bridge). This isn't going to end well for the first officer given how lenient Saru is when dealing with Michael's shenanigans. Busting her down to Lt wouldn't have been too severe given her actions and would have kept her on the bridge making valuable contributions to future storylines without the possibility of a rank conflict with the first officer.

I'd love to see Reno would make a good first officer, plus she's already a Commander so the rank wouldn't be a problem. I'd just love to see her character get more screen time.

That part is irelevant, the important part is the position the person is in, so if Nilssen get's the XO position she is automaticly the superior of Burham even if she has a lower Rank.

It is really hard to say who would be the logical person to be second in command. Most of the bridge officers are lieutenants who have had limited dialog until this season, so we just don't know who would be a logical choice there. The only other senior officers we've really seen are Stamets, Reno, and Culber, but none seem to be an obvious choice either. I'd suspect it will just stay vacant or we get someone new until Burnham inevitably solves the mystery of the Burn and the ends gloss over the insubordinate means and she is restored to the job.

I have been enjoying this season so far, but I do agree this episode seemed a bit weak.
I definitely appreciate Burnham getting some comeuppance for her continued flagrant disregard for protocol. That kinda of thing has tended to get a pass in Star Trek as a whole, but this series especially. Though I am not so sure I like the direction they are taking her character; at the moment she really doesn't belong on a starship, so it's just not going to make much sense if she doesn't either get pounded into compliance or just leave the ship, which given the Burnham-centirc nature of the show, seems unlikely.
I think part of my dislike for this episode is they made a big deal about finding the Federation, and then this episode it almost doesn't seem to matter, we're back to the whole Burn subplot, and, thus far, we haven't really SEEN much of this future Starfleet or what it means for the Discovery.
On another note regarding the nacelles everyone has been discussing: they said detaching them increases the ship's maneuverability. I suppose that can make SOME sense, the reduced mass on the hull with that and the pylons having cutouts would decrease the moment of inertia, but, frankly, I don't see it making all that much a difference. On the other end, we saw Book's ship doing a 180 by splitting into a half dozen pieces that all flip around and come back together. Maybe the Discovery will be able to do that too?
I am assuming there's some sort of transporter thingamawhatsit or subspace technowhatever that connects the warpcore to the pylons.

I also don't think this has anything to do with Saru being helped with leading better. He was the one who always weighed and went for logical options. Saru just was always overlooked at Captaincy, so its great he got the big chair finally and also doesn't hesitate to remind Burnham that he hoped she should've known better by now.
well I think that it actually did give him a little boost in confidence any good new person in a leader ship role gets that doubt inside and having the person accepting the outcome of a command boosts there confidence at least for me In the real world it does. and it actually shows it in the scene.
as for the next first officer it would make sense to me the way the story line seems to be going that it wouldn't be someone already on discovery becoming first officer I think the federation would put someone on the ship to keep an eye on things at least this is what I would do if a ship from know where ( especially from a time centuries before) appeared and I had know real way to fully trust everyone on it I definitely would put someone on that ship that had some pull to keep an eye on things it would be totally foolish not to especially after what Burnham did and the Captain being new.
