Episode Discussion
"The Sanctuary"
US Airdate: 03/12/2020 (CBS All Access)
International: 04/12/2020 (Netflix)
This thread is for the pre and post discussion of the Season 3 episode "The Sanctuary" - this will be a spoiler filled discussion so if you've found your way past the warnings in the activity stream and the spoiler tag on the thread, this is your last chance to turn back, or at least it will be at the end of this first post. You have been warned!
The Discovery travels to the home planet of Book, which is having problems with the leader of the Emerald Chain, while Stamets and Adira continue working together to search for information that could help lead them to uncovering the origins of the Burn.
Some promo shots of the upcoming episode can be found here. This episode should shed a bit more light on the Emerald Chain and also sees the return of Jonathan Frakes to the directors chair.
"The Sanctuary" is episode 8 of 13.

Of course I haven't seen the episode yet.
That being said.
Frakes = Money. There hasn't been an episode he's directed that I haven't liked.

Over the course of the season so far, one of the arcs I've been enjoying has been Detmer's struggle to find herself post-jump. In this episode, I loved that Tilly's decision as acting XO demonstrated her confidence in Kayla's skill by having her fly Book's ship against the Veridian to distract the attack on the surface. Detmer looked like she was having a lot of fun piloting manually.
Also loved that Dr. Culber wasn't having or entertaining any of Phillipa's usual swagger in light of her medical condition.
This was a really great episode!

Another solid episode. A little more advancement on the Burn, Georgiou, and Emerald Chain plot threads, and possibly closure to Detmer's weirdness this season. Some action, but didn't feel too over the top compared to some previous episodes. Notes of classic "Federation saves the day" self-contained complete story that hearkens back to older Trek series within the serialized storytelling that Disco has become known for. Humor as Saru deals with the "true" test of becoming a great captain. All in all it shows that the writers are definitely more comfortable this season and once again Frakes delivers a solid performance from the director's chair. Looking forward to see how the last 5 episodes play out.

Good episode interesting to see the resentment against the Federation. I figured the Emerald chain was a paper tiger, kinda makes me wonder how they'll solve the interstellar travel issue once they figure out the Burn issue.

The episode was good getting to see that we have a location for the point of origin of the burn now and that it may be a federation ship signal that seems to be resonating in all sectors as music is interesting. I feel this episode gave us something more on Book but left us with so many still unanswered questions, it was good to see Detmer get her mojo back in this episode it was starting to drag on a little and I had worried they would drag it on the whole season.
One thing is for sure I don't see us finding more out about the burn next week Ryn seems to know more about the burn than 1st was thought from the looks of his sit down in the end with Tilly and how he knows I can't see being fitted into the episodes we have left especially with next weeks being a 2 parter with what is looking like having an emphasis on Philipa and whats going on with her maybe a modern-day section 31 and answers to why everyone has issues with the federation given they are not revered the way they were in the past.

It was all packed into one scene, but the crew identified the origin point of the Burn, linked the recurring song to the natural emissions of that origin point, and discovered that a Federation distress beacon is buried in that origin point's song. It was only a side story amongst the larger "save Book's homeworld" main story this week, but I thought that was a big leap forward in unveiling the season's main story arc. Especially compared to the slow drop of breadcrumbs we've had so far with progress on the story. Basically it sets up Disco visiting the origin point and possibly a cliffhanger for season 4 to wrap this season on.

I didn't get the feeling that Ryn knew what started the Burn I think it was more the fact that he was brought believing the Federation was evil. The fact the Emerald Chain is running out of Dilithium is intriguing, if they get into open conflict with Starfleet or another power they will lose on attrition alone.

Some nice FX shots this week, good to see Detmer getting a chance to show off her piloting skills and feel important again. That was a pretty formidable warship she was up against it seems.
Honestly I'm not really interested in what happens on Book's home world; it could have been any planet they needed to help but i guess it ties in with an existing character so it allowed him to develop and appreciate the Federation more as a result.
The Emerald Chain seem to be nothing more than a bunch of bullies who have filled the void when the Federation collapsed post-Burn. They've been made out to be a big threat but to any organised operation they are little more than an organised crime gang running a protection racket. Now the Feds seem to be getting their house in order I think these guys will be finding their freedom severely curtailed. Also a lot of their power seems to come from scare tactics, they don't really have much power and are running out of dilithium too.
I don't really think their plot is terribly interesting overall but I guess it shows what the galaxy is like now there's no big power to keep the crime lords under control.
The cause of the Burn is getting interesting now. The music that seems to have spread everywhere is quite a cool touch; like it has somehow affected everyone in some way. I wonder if it was an attempt to communicate but the sender got the frequency wrong or something?
Also; the Federation distress signal is intriguing. There's at least one other Federation ship/object that we know has been floating in a nebula - Zora-controlled U.S.S. Discovery. Could it be that Discovery was dropped into that nebula from somewhere or somewhen and is there as a warning, or to guard the cause of the Burn?

I really hope that it isnt going to turn out to be the Enterprise sending that signal with Pike or Spock and discovery comes to the rescue and send them back to there timeline .that would totally ruin the series for me of course I am going off the deep end with my thoughts in this series it has some good things but allot of not so good things they seem to be more fan pleasing and not actual story driven trying to find ther footing fan pleasing and trying to get the story out these last few eps coming up are going to be way to fast I cannot see how they are going to successfully tell the story but the end of this season with our rushing.
I really want Discovery to be good but so far I have been neutral if I blindly just watch it it was not to bad but its like they are trying to forcefully fit an elephant into a single trailer they are telling storys of people and things that to me just dont seem to need to be known all the people pleasing . Just tell the story keep it going as time goes on the short bits of story line will be told.
it still bothers me that this show is called discovery when most of the show is about Burnham .
the only thing that saved the EP for me is the piloting skills that was cool to see her get her mojo back
ok I haven finished my morning coffee yet as you can read hehe
