Aw we have some lil' Trekkies in the group! I thought we'd all be oldies for some reason, I guess because the Berman-Verse was so long ago.
edit: Okay I didn't realize this thread was necro'd from 3 years ago. My answer still applies though.

Voted. The results are very interesting. Especially when put in context with the fact that younger people seem to be more averse to forum-based communities compared to 10 years ago. Could also be due to the fact that the Star Trek fandom as a whole grew older given that the end of TNG era is now roughly 20 years ago.

I may not be the oldest trekkie alive, but I've got a good headstart on most, as I was born in '65 and was being called Spock by my brother by the age of 3. Even at such a young age, he already saw the resemblance in how I looked at most things logically, how quietly observant I was, and how pointy my ears were.

Since the last post commented on aging and the hope for technology advances, my first response is that no one hopes for that more than me, although I could be mistaken. I'm in the largest group, too. It does my heart well to be included in a group of seasoned veterans! I track this science closely, and I'm not afraid of white papers. I think if I can hold out for (fingers crossed) 10-20 years, and that possibility exists despite some of my health issues (nuff said). OK, one thing... I wouldn't be here today if it weren't for those advances, one that came out exactly when I needed it. And life for me has been strange that way.
Since I became interested in Science at a fairly early age (8 yrs), my ardent desire and prominent thought was that I should be lucky enough to be born into the era of great scientific advances. When one grows up thinking that way, one starts reading early! So far, I'm on track to get my wish. My life has been full of "timely" advances. The computer is one of them. I've been coding since the first one came out, and I've forgotten more languages than I currently know. (And, I'm only realizing I should post this in introductions... so don't be surprised if you see a (cough) kind-of copy of this there!
As one might guess, I'm an amateur quantum theorist, and when one loves all things nerdy and geeky, I personally think Debroglie-Bohm are the bomb when it comes to quanta. (Geek alert) I read somewhere that Pauli and Heisenberg disagreed with Copenhagen on the fundamental definition of wavefunction, and I wish I could find it! Anyway, I felt that whatever that disagreement was about pointed directly to the possibility of teleportation. Yes, I can bring Star Trek into this. Since everything is a wave function, waves act in two ways. Constructively and Deconstructively. I postulate two ideas: 1. The only reason we are where we are in space/time is due to our constructive and deconstructive relationship with everything in the universe. Except for entanglement (and that's the key to teleportation). 2. Your phase variance depends mostly on your local harmonic vibration states, which is your location. That means if we resonated at the harmonic of a different location, that's where we would be. A person could have their local phase harmonics deconstructed, and rephased to construct them at the phase harmonic of the location desired, and they would be there because it's the only place where they would have those phase harmonics.
Saying what needs to be done is one thing. Saying how to do it is another. We do not have the tech to do this, and last, when it comes to the phase and the harmonics, we have done very little in this area. IOW, the only thing we can do is to count the beat difference of a single wave by using a Michelson interferometer. Stone age compared to what we'd need to teleport. Phase is an undervalued science, and I wouldn't know how to do it either. But, the ramifications are enormous. I don't think we can clearly state exactly what happens when a wavefunction is deconstructed. (If you're still with me, I'm not going into it because... woo hoo, you're still reading!
That said, I am enjoying the 14th Anniversary event. When my wife gets home, and I have to get off right away. I do the Battle of Wolf 359. It is the fastest TFO I know! I've since learned the reason why. The speed of the event is related not to the level of "normal" level players but to the elites who have all the Marks they could want, and they just want the two points for the Event. This saddens me as I need those Marks and I'm so disappointed when I see all the stranded survivors no one picked up, and all of those missed marks. Fortunately, I can rinse and repeat. (yawn) It's like watching paint dry... or doing Omega molecules. I'd forgotten how bad my carpel tunnel could get! (sigh) Old age ain't for sissies. -ZMC
