For those who play Cryptic's, Magic Legends... it was announced they are officially shutting down production and the Zen store. The game will go down forever on October 31st, 2021.

Yeah, the news broke and speculation is going on STO Reddit. Maybe the pandemic or maybe the game wasn't living up to expectations? Something happened.

Sad news. A lot of people put a lot of hard work into this project. Hopefully the affected teams will move on to bigger and better things quickly!

If Cryptic has any sense (LOL) they'd move those affected staff back to STO and Neverwinter.

There's been a marked drop in quality and quantity of work on STO in particular since that game was announced.

I think they bit off more than they could chew and the greed aspect of their business model didn't help.

Well this is both surprising and not surprising, you'd figure being such a well known IP the game would have done well but also the fact that cryptic tried to immediately make it microtransaction heavy showed it was doomed, kind of wonder if this will hurt cryptic in anyway given how hyped the game was for it to fail like this..

I would believe microtransaction heavy games would be a hard turnoff. That stuff really adds up eventually if you look at it in perspective. I miss the old days when you pop in a diskette for a shareware demo, if you liked the game enough then you buy the full version and then that was it, you had it all. If you're lucky maybe it will get a sequel and you'll get it too... those days are long gone... RIP shareware era...

I think they got greedy with their expectations. They probably thought "Magic players already throw thousands at the card game and are easy fish to hook for some "micro"-transactions"; but I suspect they never considered the people playing are not going to be the same as the card game players.
There's already a bajillion Magic clone games out there stuffed to the roof with gambling and pay-2-win crap; I doubt it could compete and the reviews I read were pretty bad.
Personally it didn't really do anything new and didn't exactly strike me as a 2021 game when looking at the visuals and mechanics.


The game must have been performing really badly to just give up on it, or maybe the IP pulled out; who knows.

As seen here in March https://ufplanets.com/showthread.php...=Magic+Legends a few of us tried it and seen that at the time it was going to be a cash cow game because the way it was set up, i know i never really loaded it back up to see anything more on it the way it was. Hopefully the staff they took STO and Neverwinter will be re-associated with the roles they once had and not thrown on the scrap heap because they failed in this venture

They've already announced they will refund all microtransactions that people already made, so unless Wizards of the Coast fronted all the startup and development costs for the project, Cryptic/PWE are taking some degree of a loss on this one. For them to call off the formal launch during an open beta, I'm guessing there either weren't enough players overall trying out the game to make it worth the overhead to run it, or they really overestimated how much people would spend on the game vs. what people were actually shelling out during the beta. Trying to launch a big new game on the tail end (hopefully!) of the pandemic with all the job uncertainties people are still experiencing probably didn't help matters either.

I downloaded the game on Day 1 of the open beta, tried it for maybe 10 minutes, and basically forgot I had it installed until they announced this today so it wasn't terribly memorable of a game for me, but I've also not really ever gotten sucked into the Magic craze in general personally. Rather than try it out again, I just went ahead and uninstalled since there is no point now in trying to love a game that will die in a few months. Hopefully Cryptic can redirect some of those dev teams back to STO, Neverwinter, and other games that haven't been as big of priorities lately, but we'll just have to see what happens.

yep, the devs were blind sided with the closure notice but understand it. On their discord they were chating with players answering questions and normal convo with that people were talking about.

Just came across this on Reddit today. Apparently it was the lack of microtransaction sales that led to the plug being pulled on the game, and reportedly at least 44 people were laid off as a result according to one of the people interviewed here. Not sure how big the team was to know if this was the whole crew or if some people are being reassigned to other games, but definitely some people who are now looking for a new job. At least on the somewhat bright side, sounds like a lot of other game studios are reaching out to these folks to maybe snap them up for other companies.
