STAR TREK "Prequel"
Chapter 1
Captain's Log_
Stardate_31224.2_
Following the survey of the 7 planets within the Donatu System, Donatu V showed it was very rich in Dilithium and was sub sequentially authorized by Starfleet Command for mining excavation. Because of the planet's close proximity to Klingon territory I was given command of the Patton, a refitted but 80 year old Marshall Class Light Cruiser.
If the Klingons did engage us we would be more then simply outgunned. Our orders were simple... patrol All four sectors surrounding Donatu V for any signs of incoming incursions. Knowing what I do regarding the Klingons they will not allow us to claim such a high yield resource so close to their territory. A fight was inevitable, it was only a matter of---
Captain? We have new info regarding what you anticipated. Ensign Gre has offered to relay.
Go ahead Ensign Gre...
Three Klingon ships have just been identified by our scanners. Their collective approach vector indicates they are on course for Donatu V.
Red Alert, transmit to all ships the heading 33, 42, 65. Also, Inform Starfleet Command that we will need reinforcements... Tell the other ships in our vicinity to head to those coordinates immediately!!!
Aye Sir! Transmitting now to all ships and to Starfleet Command.
Starfleet Command receives the encrypted transmission and gives orders for two Baton Rogue Class Ships to provide reinforcements within the Donatu System. The Eisenhower sister to the Patton suddenly entry warped near orbit of Donatu V to accompany the Patton...
Good morning Commander.
Lt. Commander Decker, it's a pleasure to see that your ship is still intact. ((grins))
Yes Commander Mendez, and I plan on keeping it that way.
They outgun us 2 to 1. I know I outrank you but I've always trusted your instincts given your repeated successes in the Romulan War... what's your plan Decker? ((The middle aged senior officer interlocks his fingers in deep anticipation))
Fire all weapons Commander and follow me into the planet's atmosphere before the Klingons can get a complete reading on us!
Very well Lt. Commander, issuing orders now...
Both Marshall Class Destroyers fired full spread volleys of all weapons then quickly spun towards the atmosphere of Donatu V. Just as their vessels completed piercing the atmosphere the 3 Klingon ships entered scan range of the recent projectiles fired by the Federation ships now in hiding....
Where are they?? Our scans indicated their energy projectiles fired here!!! The cowards are so afraid they couldn't even face us before firing!! ((Chuckles)) They aren't even WORTHY OF DEATH!!!
Do not underestimate the HU-MONS... they may be cowards.... but stupid they are NOT!
Our scanners indicate they could be within the atmosphere of Donatu V... sensors show no interplanetary defense systems... entering the atmosphere will disrupt our cloaking devices... we are changing course!
Yes we too will change course! We WILL seize the HU-MON's mining facility and take what is rightfully OURS!!!
Both Marshall Class Destroyers dart from the concealment of the upper atmosphere of the planet and fire full spread volleys of all weapons targeting the broadside of both Klingon ships that closed distance. One of the Klingon ships was heavily damaged, just as both Federation Starships circled back into the lower atmosphere. Moments later they both emerged firing again simultaneously towards the same damaged Klingon vessel.
This time the Klingon Battlecruiser was instantly completely destroyed. But the other Klingon vessel remembered the previous attack, anticipating he ordered his helmsman upon his vessel to quickly turn and fire first with its two disrupter cannons causing Commander Mendez's shields to fail, and finally with it's main weapon the photon torpedo upon Commander Mendez's Starship. The ship swelled and buckled erupting explosions that peppered across it's belly.
Lt. Commander Decker fired another full spread of weapons towards the ship that hit Commander Mendez. 6 of his Particle beams score a direct hit. Luckily for the Klingons that resided within the ship the D7 Battlecruiser doesn't sustain enough damage to be inoperable. It quickly cloaks and disengages. But then as soon as Lt. Commander Decker was about to open a channel to Commander Mendez another Battlecruiser decloaks directly in front of the stern of the heavily damaged Eisenhower..
Qulvo' puq toDta'!!!! ((Clenches fist))
The Eisenhower is completely destroyed.
((Slams fist)) Dammit NOOO!!! Fire all weapons at that ship, increase power towards Particle beam cannons! ((Teeth Clenched))
Aye, Sir!! Firing now!
The Patton returns fire instantly missing with it's photon torpedoes due to the faster and more elusive Klingon ship in evasive maneuvers but the Patton does score several hits with Particle beams cannons. Multiple beams of light race cross the armor of the Klingon ship compromising it's outer hull causing a myriad of explosions across it's beam and starboard/bow sides. Both Klingon Battlecrusiers warp out of the system, just as two Baton Rouge Class Starships arrive via warp near Donatu V...

STAR TREK "Prequel"
Chapter 2
Even though we had thwarted the Klingon attack we had done so at great cost. Commander Mendez along with 156 men and women paid the price of defending Donatu V with their lives. Since the past couple of years following the Romulan War I had generally believed that it was time for the Federation to vastly improve it's ship complement.
80 year old Marshall Class Destroyers were not going to cut it against the Klingons. The Romulans fatal flaw is that they would simply match the number of fleets we would send by just sending twice the amount of ships, if they were available within their shipyards. Their ignorance regarding our second Verteron array upon Venus would lead to the turning point of the war. Romulans were working in the dark while the Klingons now are not.
The deaths of the crew of the Eisenhower sent shockwaves through the Federation. If any of our allies were on the fence regarding the necessity of upgrading our fleet those thoughts ended on Stardate 31224.2. The deciding factor however did not have to be paid in blood.
Several years earlier a man named Robert April made a decision that should have ended his career. Instead it triggered a series of events that would ultimately define the ship class that would personify the Federation. Robert April was the First Officer aboard the Baton Rouge Class Starshiped named the Los Angeles. His ship was the 2nd of the two Baton Rouge Class Starships that jumped in to reinforce the Patton, and the former Eisenhower.
The limitations of warp 3.8 and being First Officer aboard a vessel which needed frequent repairs grew increasingly frustrating for April. If the Federation had ships capable of remaining in space for several years at a time, fitted with proper exploratory equipment while still possessing armament capable of being superior to the Klingons... the lives lost aboard the Eisenhower never would have happened.
Fed up with non action by the Federation, April sought out a young but brilliant engineer at the Cochrane Institute on Proxima. His name was Laurence Maverick. Laurence thought as Robert did in regards to the possibilities of moving faster then Warp 7. None of the Federations enemies had been able to do it, and at the Federation Science Academy they believed to exceed Warp 7 would cause the ship to travel back in time.
Robert April himself had been quoted in regards to exceeding warp drive, "The only absolute proof that this was the final speed barrier, was other people's failure to break it."
Laurence created a engine design that could exceed warp 7, but like the engine itself the cpu that would control it was also theoretical. So April had the theorist, now he needed the engineer that could make it happen. Enter Robert Daystrom, 25 year old computer genius. Founder of a new technology called Duotronics. His creation melded the speed of computer software with a symmetric user interface.
Now April had found his engineer, but he still needed to meet his engineer. Laurence seemed to avoid April's calls and texts like the Avarian Flu. So April did the one thing that as I told you before should have ended his career.
He beamed directly into Laurence's office.
Robert April did receive a black mark from Starfleet, however he accomplished his mission. He was able to have a conversation with Laurence Daystrom. Laurence looked over what Robert had compiled thus far and agreed to do the project, if of course it could be funded. The attack upon Donatu V made funding a moot point now that he had the more then qualified team to execute.
Even though the ships could be designed to lack repair and supplies for longer periods of time April argued that their limit be 5 year missions. April's strategy was to utilize the best minds of all of the different allies of the Federation. Vulcans, Tellerites, Proximans all working together in concert to build a ship capable of long tiered exploration.
"Time is often the ultimate equalizer. You have to admire its perfect symmetry. Hell, it's the reason why I am now 133 years old and able to stand here today to witness the Enterprise launch once again. If only Trip could have lived to see this.... Captain Robert April, I wish you the best of luck..."

STAR TREK "Prequel"
Chapter 4
What I cannot understand is why in the hell would you assign such a distinguished Officer to the Enterprise, instead of the Constitution?
You are referring to Lt. Commander Spock?
Yes, it's obvious that he should be assigned to the Constitution, as the Enterprise already has a capable First Officer.
((Chuckles)) I have heard that she answers to the moniker "Number 1."
And what's so funny about that? She takes pride in being Captain April's top officer. That's nothing to laugh at.
Mr. Daystrom, because you played a part in creating--
I did NOT simply play a part, my Duotronics technology is the reason both the Constitution, and the Enterprise exist!
Gentleman, lets all dial back a bit. Mr. Daystrom, your contributions are more then respected and appreciated.... as well as your commentary regarding our officer selection. Let's all remember we are here to provide constructive criticism, and objective minded decisions involving this process. Now, Spock has shown an exemplary record within Starfleet Academy but he would be the very first Vulcan to graduate, let alone a Commanding Officer aboard a flagship starship. Maybe assigning him to the Enterprise is the best place for him now?
I disagree. Spock is ready to work without a net under Captain Decker, Cromwell, or even Pike whenever you all agree to see fit to grant him command. Now I do not need to remind you gentleman of how many years the Vulcans kept Starfleet from moving forward by telling us that "playing it safe" was simply for our own good. You all know I was close to Admiral Archer for years before he died. The worst thing we could possibly do is mirror the Vulcan's actions in regards to Lt. Commander Spock. We would be telling the Vulcans that what they did to us was right...
"...."
Perhaps, Lt. Commander S'chn T'gai Spock.... should be assigned to the Constitution. Now, lets talk about this promising Commander... Pike, did you say?

STAR TREK "Prequel"
Chapter 5
STARDATE 2265.1_
SAN FRANCISCO_
STAR FLEET ACADEMY_
FIRST OFFICERS LOG SUPPLEMENTAL...
UPON WORD OF MY ASSIGNMENT TO THE USS CONSTITUTION, I HAVE DECIDED TO UPDATE THE CURRENT JUNIOR OFFICER TECHNICAL MANUAL. OVER THE PAST 5 YEARS MY POST GRADUATE STUDIES HAVE LED ME TO BELIEVE THAT THESE IMPROVEMENTS WERE MORE THEN NECCESARY. THE FIRST WOULD PERTAIN TO CHANGING THE OVERALL COLOR OF THE MANUAL. IT SEEMED ILLOGICAL TO RETAIN THE ADVERTISMENT LIKE FORMAT OF THE PREVIOUS EDITION, AND IMPLEMENT A MORE CONSERVATIVE MODEL.
NEXT, I WOULD ENDEAVOR TO MORE CLEARLY DELINEATE THE GENERAL USE OF SENSOR EQUIPMENT IN REGARDS TO A VESSEL AS SMALL AS A SHUTTLE, OR EVEN A MODERN STARSHIP.
SCIENCES
STARSHIP SCANNING/SENSING IN ACTIVE MODE
(km -- information potentially available on scanned/sensed object)
(5x10^15 = 500 ly = 150 pc -- number of objects and speed)
(AU = Astronomical Unit equal to a kilo/mile)
1,000,000 = 0.7 AU -- general size of object
500,000 = 0.3 AU -- shield status, fire control active, race of unit
200,000 = 0.13 AU -- coarse energy output
140,000 -- almost all facing weapons can be identified
80,000 -- exact current energy output
60,000 -- (after several minutes) life form readings, weapon arming status
SHUTTLE SCANNING/SENSING IN ACTIVE MODE
(KM -- information potentially available on scanned/sensed object)
2x10^13 = 2 ly-- number of objects and speed
350,000 -- general size of object
200,000 -- shield status, fire control active, race of unit
60,000 -- coarse energy output
40,000 -- almost all face weapons can be identified
10,000 -- exact current energy output
2,000 -- (after several minutes) life form readings, weapon arming status
STEALTH SCANNING MODES
• If the scanning/sensing ship is in passive mode, decrease ranges by 25%.
• If the object being scanned is being stealthy (1.), decrease ranges by 33%
• If the object being detected is running silent (2.), decrease ranges by 50%.
1. A ship is being stealthy if it is in passive mode, minimum shields, warp 2 or less, and has no weapons armed. Violating any one of these conditions means the ship is no longer in stealth mode.
2. A ship is running silent if its sensors/scanners, shields, and weapons are down and it is traveling at sublight speeds.
NOTE: It generally takes about 10 minutes to complete a thorough sensor scan. Taking extra time (around 30 minutes) will improve results by one range category.

STAR TREK "Prequel"
Chapter 6
What do you have there Bones?
Why Jim, this is none other than Romulan Ale. I figured with all of us graduating from the Academy, why not celebrate the right way?
Bones I love where your heart is at, my friend. Spock, c'mon over here... Partake, in this... exquisite libation Bones has seen fit to bless us with.
You refer to the liquid compound currently outlawed in---
Look you green blooded hobgoblin! None of us will probably see each other again, sit down and have a drink with the people you graduated with!
The odds of all of us being commissioned to the same ship were approximately 1100 to 1... but since you are correct Doctor McCoy of "guessing" the color of my blood, I will oblige you. (Raises glass) Here's to all of us living long and having much success. ((4 glasses clang))
There is no class on Vulcan anatomy within the Academy right, Bones? (sips with eyes enlarging as he swallows)
Not during my, or should I say our tenure... however there was some talk of it being added to the curriculum. (sips showing no reaction)
So it was an honest guess, then.
Yes Jim, I believe it was. (Sips)
What's on your mind Spock? (Sips)
I was just contemplating something... (sips)
Well, share it with us!
Yes, we all want to know what has your attention?
I was just contemplating what it would have been like on a ship with all of you...
"...."
