Episode Discussion
"MERCY"
US Airdate: 21/04/2022 (Paramount+)
International: 22/04/2022 (Amazon Prime)
This thread is for the pre and post discussion of the eighth episode "Mercy" - this will be a spoiler filled discussion so if you've found your way past the warnings in the activity stream and the spoiler tag on the thread, this is your last chance to turn back, or at least it will be at the end of this first post. You have been warned!
Picard and Guinan, held in FBI custody, work to free themselves as the time for the Europa launch is rapidly approaching. Seven and Raffi catch up with Jurati and are forced to confront what she's now become thanks to the Borg Queen.
You can find a preview of the episode details here. If this weeks guest star Jay Karnes looks familiar, that's because he played Lt. Ducane in the Voyager episode "Relativity" - in what may be a meta-reference, his character here is named Wells, which was the class the USS Relativity belonged to. Karnes is also well known for his role as Holland "Dutch" Wagenbach on The Shield.
Mercy is episode 8 of 10.

I don't know how I feel about this episode. I think this season overall is an improvement on last season, but I'm not necessarily a fan of how they've developed Guinan's character and species.
If I had to put into words what I'm unhappy with, I think it would have to be that it feels like the writers extrapolated personal characteristics of Guinan (i.e. bartender) into species characteristics. I get that El-Aurians are good listeners, but that doesn't necessarily transfer into all being bartenders. Counselors, Barbers, etc. are all professions that do a lot of listening. It feels like lazy writing to me. It would have been much more interesting if they had been able to build more original El-Aurian background instead of relying on what they already have.
