No offense taken, that's an accurate statement, about me lacking information and experience; of course I'm trying to improve... but my own personal approach requires I understand what I am doing. Experience being the best teacher, I go out and try things. I try to see things as I encounter them, like the huge effects of consoles, BOffs, traits, this has been a little slow for me to appreciate how strong the effects are.
Yes, I agree that piloting skill is important, what's actually needed is being so totally familiar with a particular TFO that there is no hesitation, that as each objective is fulfilled, I can head straight towards it at full speed and get in on the shooting in time, and of course being a skilled enough pilot to accomplish it. That's not knocking the game, the game is ancient, so it's to be expected that there are lots of people who know these things cold. I'm not one of them yet, three months so far.
Then there's the question of what to pilot.. I already note how widely differing the ships are in how to dogfight one for instance. Then even more detailed things, like pets have 20km range and are a major damage contributor, but the only carrier I've tried, the Jarok, handles quite different than say the Temporal Battlecruiser I used for some time. SO much to learn. I had been using "Cdr Sci and lots of guns" as an informal guide to my ship selection, but the impact of other things calls that into question, so I definitely need to get more experience there.
A large number of things here, reputation, endeavours, admiralty.. they simply require time. I haven't even hit 6 rep with anyone yet, so yep, lots of things to do there.
Now, as for what people apparently call 'meta' builds, the cookbook list of 'get this' 'get that' may actually be The Build if I simply want a big huge number, but what's the point if I have no idea *why* it's considered top.
For a few years. I played a phone base-building PvP game from its earliest days (on the cheap, poor at the time), and I know the feeling of going thru, developing tactics, troop/equipment buildouts, and seeing them succeed in combat and get adopted generally in some cases.
What eventually happened, websites appeared, cookbooks got published, starting as build comparisons with 1-5 star ratings, and you'd even see things like clans *requiring* you have a 9 star character build to apply and such.
The game changed, basically it now catered to the wallet warriors who just wanted to 'look up what I need to buy' and go out there without really understanding things like how, and when to fight, and from the viewpoint of a long term player trying not to spend money, it really ruined the game, it trivialized all the effort of learning how to play the game well, and crushed any sense of satisfaction from that. There were people spending hundreds, thousands in some cases per month. Did a similar sort of evolution happen here? I don't want to be one of those who run around in a 'Space Barbie' and don't know how to fight it..
If it seems to you that I am trying to present something as in any way authoritive, that's certainly not my intent. If I see what seems to me to be a discrepancy, what I try to do is point out whatever apparent paradox and see if I can resolve it in my own mind. Everyone here has been more than generous is sharing their wisdom and experience.
I just looked over your keyboard article, it's informative. It says a lot about the level of detail people have put into things here. I still fight somewhat simplistically, I just line up things on the first row I want to do in the order I want to maximize damage, and even at that, yea, I've noticed that some important skills trigger cooldown timeouts on other important skills, so tweaking on timing is called for, and other details; but no, I have not taken the trouble to set up a macro file.. more things to do.
So yep, I'd say that's a pretty convincing case for my still being a noob. I am trying to learn as I go.
I'm not really sure how to say this tactfully, but... T'Bang, you're groping about in an information void trying to figure out things that have long been understood.
Piloting makes a major difference. The ability to properly position yourself, to do so in a timely fashion, when and which abilities to use, all of that makes a difference. Yes, there are variances due to team performance. That's because we don't talk about DPS in a vacuum, as an irrelevant theoretical concept. Your DPS only matters in a team situation (in Advanced/Elite STFs), so it needs to be accounted for to attain a relevant practical DPS number. It doesn't matter if you can do 999k DPS alone if you only do 1k DPS in an actual STF with a team because you can never actually get yourself into position when there are other people around. For that matter, content also matters. Different locations, different spawns, different compositions, all of those affect the DPS you do in different situations. That's why ISA (ISE back before the difficulty revamp) has been used as the benchmark (it's consistent with little variability) for over a decade.
It's been a while since I poked at parsing but I don't think you're even in an ISA, and your abilities at first blush look to lack focus. I strongly advise you to read up on stuff at the stobuilds reddit.

That’s almost 50% less damage output for a Klingon than a Fed player; that’s got to be something seriously wrong.
Completely ignoring the DPS passing side of things because that’s not really relevant here; there must be something wrong with how the tooltips are working or with the actual characters themselves.
What happens if you give them both the phaser cannons or both disrupt or cannons instead? Do you get the same difference.
Is this a bug linked to the weapon type, the species, the faction etc? Or is it some weird bug where certain things together combine to cause an issue.

It shows the same value, I am setting up a test scenario on Tribble to test if it is only a display bug or a major one.

Last but not least we figured out what the problem is:
It is the T6 Saber Class, once you have full master the ship you are going to see different numbers on your gear.
