SIM 01A - Science Investigation

Hello Cadets, my name is Commander Ellis and I will be briefing you today for the simulation as a Starfleet Academy Cadet. This Simulation is designed to test you while you absorb the fundamental aspects of your training, and to prepare you for real encounters when you are assigned a station within a Starship. Make sure you meet all objectives to ensure you pass this sim.

CADET NILEN, AZRAL - (SCI) ASTRONOMY/TRILL POLYTECH

YOUR OBJECTIVES CONSIST OF THE FOLLOWING:

• Successfully scan Unidentified Starship
• Relay Overall Strength of Starship once it's been Identifed
• Relay any changes in lifeform readings of Identified Vessal
• Relay area's of damage aboard your Starship and the opposing Starship
• Hail Starship and quell the engagement

"CADET ARIAT, ISHAN YOUR TEST HAS NOW BEGUN..."

Loud blasts reverberate in all directions around you. As you quickly raise up to a sitting position. After placing your right hand over your face and rubbing your eyes profusely, you take a moment to rapidly blink to regain your vision. You momentarily glance around and see several people in medical uniforms picking themselves up from the metalic flooring. Instinctively you deduce that more then 6 people are being administered to. Placing both your hands behind you to propel yourself from the raised bedding sends your feet to impact the flooring in synchronicity.

You wait before moving as you clasp your forehead attempting to maintain your balance.. you realize you are still a bit groggy. The sound of more blasts cause you to anticipate another shudder from the ship. You don't have to wait long before your apprehension proves correct...


Oh, I see you have awoken and figured out that we are under attack! Well don't just stand there like a rooted Bolorian Beset! You are wanted on the Bridge.... now hurry!

I bend my knees slightly and try to hold on to the bed to prepare for the shake, but in my weakened state, I still stumble and almost fall over as the next violent quake hits the ship. I stand still for a second in an attempt to collect myself. Taking one last look around the room, I hit the communicator pinned to my chest.



"Nilen to Bridge. What's the situation?"

Awaiting a response, I walk out of the medbay toward the turbolift that'll take me to the Bridge. I move slowly at first since my head's still spinning, but I eventually speed up almost into a jog as I regain my bearings. I look around the corridor as I walk to try and figure out our situation. Even though I know this is just a training simulation, I don't think I've ever been quite as nervous in my life. Maybe once. Or twice.

Commander, we are taking fire from an unidentified vessel. Both you and the Captain were both rendered unconscious during their initial attack. Decks 3 - 6 have taken extensive damage, and we have lost 9 Souls Sir. Will you both be able to return to the bri---


They are coming around to make another pass at us!


Ensign Celo, maintain your poise! Ensign Yao take evasive action!!


Yes Sir.


Commander, it is imperative that you and the captain return... quickly.

My head's still spinning slightly when I answer.



I'm coming up to the bridge. Looks like the captain's still out.

I enter the turbolift at the end of the corridor and say "Bridge." As I feel the lift jump upward, I allow myself a moment to think. Honestly, this simulation's a bit harder than I'd expected. Starfleet must really not like taking it easy for a change.

When the turbolift's doors open, I walk out onto the Bridge, take my position at the science officer's console and say..



Situation report!

While saying so, I begin scanning the enemy vessel.

As the klaxons continue to wail Cadet Nilen's fingers glide across the scanner controls. The scanners indicate the unidentified vessel is armed and is approximately 2,700 Kilometers away while producing 3,500 terawatts, and the beam firepower is estimated by the cpu to be roughly equal to 70. The starship is now arming torpedoes and has a heading straight toward your vessel. The science officer who was standing at the position only moments ago stepped aside as soon as the Commander entered and came to his post. With his mouth gaping he continues befuddlingly in silence... finally he musters up the courage to utter a chorus of words which amass to the opposite of sophistication....


Huh? Wha- wha -what are you doing?


((Looking surprised at Cadet Nilen)) Commander are you ok?


Commander, as I said before we are taking fire from an unidentified vessel. Both you and the Captain were both rendered unconscious during their initial attack. Decks 3 - 6 have taken extensive damage, and again we have lost 9 Souls Sir. It would appear that our aggressors are preparing to fire again at closer range. It is likely that they hit us with torpedo when they attacked us before. The kinetic energy must have jarred you and the captain to an unconcious state.


((Looks up for a moment and then feverishly continues keying in her adjustments to pitch))


(continues glaring at Cadet Nilen) Commander? Until.. the Captain returns to the bridge... your correct designation is here. (motions to the Captain's chair)

The vulcan female not more then 28 Earth years old raises quickly from her seated position, steps forward and then pivots to the right of the Captain's chair to face the woman who is from her perspective her superior. Her left eyebrow raises inquisitively anticipating her Commander who is in reality the Cadet's next move...

I feel myself blush violently as I lift my hands from the console and take a step back while turning my head to meet the Vulcan's inquisitive gaze. I stammer out a response.



Um... Of course. Yeah. Just wanted to make sure... uh... that we scanned the enemy.

I walk quickly toward the captain's chair and sit down while trying to avoid looking directly at the Vulcan woman. God, I'm mortified.





"Enemy is arming torpedoes and heading straight toward us. Helm, prepare to take evasive action. Science officer, continue scanning enemy vessel. Report any status changes and scan for lifeform readings." I spin my head to look at the Vulcan and think for a moment. "As for you... Send damage control teams to Decks 3 through 6."

I look toward the front viewscreen. I feel like I'm forgetting something. Oh! "Tactical, report on our weapons and shields. And.. Ensign Celo? Get me that ship on screen."

While waiting on the bridge crew to carry out their orders, I attempt to hail the enemy ship.

[Kiflin]

Aye Sir! I'll have them up in one moment!
(Starship's port veers left to angle itself away from the inline trajectory of the incoming threat)


Yes Ma'am... I - I - I mean Sir! (Looking very awkwardly) Uh... there are not more then 4 life forms aboard the bridge of that ship. Looks like the rest of the crew are not showing up, Commander.


(Nods) Your orders will be followed. (Pivots and walks to sit down at her station and relays the Cadet's Orders)


Pulling up enemy starship.... now! Oh, and putting him up as well!


Our shields are at 63% All of our weapons are still functioning optimally Commander. The enemy vessel has suffered no damag---What?? He's flying the same Starship as us??

I have never known anyone to hail in the middle of a battle? Surely you must want to surrender to me!?

Huh. Well, at least I know what class starship I'm flying now.



This is Commander Nilen of the USS... of the United Federation of Planets to unidentified vessel. Cease fire and power down your weapons immediately.

I mute the audio and video feeds of the channel.



"Tactical, target their weapons array. Fire phasers at will if they don't power down weapons in the next... mm... 20 seconds. Helm, try to distance us from their ship to give us more room to maneuver. Science station, keep me appraised on changes in life form readings as well as the target's shield status."

I turn in my chair towards the Vulcan. "Lieutenant, have the computer see how long our shields will last under fire, considering their beam firepower of 70."

[Kiflin]

Aye Sir, firing phasers in 20 seconds...


I'm on it... (The ship sways to the left while rear thrusters invert thrust the Oberth Class Starship backwards)


Yes Commander... (pauses to calculate herself) the answer is approximately 4 (Rounds) firing cycles if they only use phasers... we would only last two more hits if coupled with torpedoes. Keep in mind Commander, their shields are at 100%, ours are at 63%...the overall strength for their vessel is 116.


(shakes his head and mumbles to himself) Vulcans...always showing off...

I am Besvav Sikaan and I would suggest that you allow us to pass. We already delt with the treacherous Federation liars who formally possessed this ship, we can easily--- what are you doing? YOU DARE GET ME TO TALK WHILE YOU MOVE TO ATTACK!!! BATTLE STATIONS!!!

I can't help but to raise an eyebrow at the Vulcan. Damn. We can't beat them in an outright fight. Maybe..



Lieutenant, I want you to calculate the possibility of and the risks involved in a boarding action to take control of the enemy's bridge. They have shields up, but I remember hearing about EM windows that possibly allow transport through shields. Should be.. comparatively easy for us to calculate, considering they're basically flying our ship.
And someone find out how far away the nearest Federation ship is.

If this is going to work, I'm gonna need to stall for time. Maybe the enemy captain likes space films or Klingon opera?



Tactical, belay my last order. Maybe he's still up for talking. Helm, keep distancing us from them. Take it slow.

I unmute the channel to the enemy ship.

Captain Sikaan, hold your fire. The Federation's nothing if not... reasonable. Ask anyone. I'm happy to negotiate.
