As popular as Romulans are among the vocal DPS community for the game, it is a bit surprising the devs don't show a bit more love their way when it comes to content. Instead, they were the first wall to be knocked down for cross-faction play, their unique story content is probably now the most dated looking material in the main game, and even things that should be relatively simple and straight out canon like uniforms, bearded Romulan men, and the like aren't happening and new Romulan ships are even a rare sight anymore. Yes we all love the Federation, but do we really need a dozen different variants of every Federation ship frame or could we maybe try for at least a tiny bit more balance?

Ten Forward Weekly 10/08/22
- New ship: Sagan Command Cruiser
- R&D promo box
- Doesn't kitbash with the Constellation due to using a different skeleton/being significantly larger
- Thomas and Hector worked on the initial designs of the ship for Picard S2
- Cryptic got the original 3D model from the effects house and shaved down the polygons so it would work in STO
- Original model had bits of the interior in it, in the STO version you can see into the bridge and the warp core
- Had to do some additions to the materials they use for windows and lights to get all the lights on the ship since the original version had so many lights/windows on it
- Original 3d model had little Easter eggs in it, on the exposing piping near the engines they had literal steam boilers and such built into the model
- Ship uses a new material exclusive to this ship
- Unique console: Harmonic shield barrier. Creates a shield in front of your ship for 45 seconds(based off of the shield from the end of PIC S2)
- Shield blocks you from moving through it(you can fly around it), breaks line of sight(cant shoot through it) and taunts enemies to fire at it. Player/allies behind it gain damage resistance buffs, and the shield gets reinforced. The longer you/allies are behind it the shield grows in size/taunts more enemies
- Reinforcement doesn't work with hanger pets, torpedoes, and mines, but works with everything else like turrets, saucer sep, and NPC allies
- Ship trait: Reverberant Shielding. Feedback pulse and reverse shield polarity trigger each other
- No new bridge for this ship
- Kael is still pushing to get the new Fed tutorial bridges made playable, and Jared said hes going to try to get time on the new round of work to do that
- Jessie messaged Kael about going through the Captain's Table map, and converting all the encounters still using the old encounter system, which they should've been converted to the new one years ago, and it led him to discover that every encounter, and every FSM, which dictate how AI act, on that map was broken so hes going though and fixing them all on his spare time. Should fix issues with NPCs not spawning with clothes, or not spawning at all.
- Cryptic isn't allowed to publish specific odds for lockboxes in STO. Neverwinter did it, and they're looking at how successful that idea is for them before doing it for STO, and how it might work for STO. Big issue is that Neverwinter made multiple changes to their lootboxes at once, so its difficult to see which change had what impact.
- Kael has a monthly meeting with the character artists where he bugs them to make the Picard uniforms we don't already have in-game
- Cryptic is having a meeting about the VFX spam this week. Jeremy says not to get your hopes up because the results of that meeting might be "we can't do ♥♥♥♥"
- Kael hopes they do another KDF/RR ship soon. Part of the problem is that most of the new ships they've been given from the shows, which they tend to jump on quicker, have been Federation ships. And(jokingly) another part of the problem is that the ship team are Federation nerds. And Jeremy adds, while its not the only thing that matters, there is a track record that federation ships sell better. They tried to fix this by opening up all ships to everyone, to try to get people to buy KDF/RR ships, but Trek fans love those saucer/nacelle ships.
- Cryptic has ships scheduled into early next year, and while not all confirmed, there are non-Fed ships on this list. And Jeremy does clarify that non-Fed does mean not Terran either
- Kael says, while looking at the ship schedule, there is an alien ship coming relatively soon, another alien ship coming for free relatively soon, and another one next year, and maybe one more after that, and then back into Fed ships all the way down to where the current schedule ends. Kael also implies SNW Gorn ships may be on the radar, but no promises just yet
- Back when Cryptic was making STO 12+ years ago they asked CBS if they could set up the game like Champions Online, where you could change your power colors, but CBS at the time said no because they wanted phaser/disrupters etc to look like they did on the shows. So when the team 13 years ago designed the game they didn't design the powers to be customizable. To now make the powers customizable, which Kael isn't sure they have permission from CBS to do, would be a huge amount of work. Back when they did cross faction flying the team had to do data work on nearly 700 ships, and theres an exponential larger amount of weapons in STO. This is further complicated by the artwork for things like beam overload, surgical strikes, etc being unique, adding more work on top of the pile. Each weapon set takes between 4-8 days to make for the artwork. Jeremy guesses theres around 100 weapon types in the game. So even if they had the system to allow for it to be changed, all the artwork would need to be redone for all those weapons to allow for it. Not saying it can't happen, but its an incredibly daunting task with a lot of baggage on it. Jeremy loves the idea himself.
- Back when STO first launched there was a powerhue command that allowed you to change effect colors, but the problem with that was not only the CBS thing, but that it changed EVERYTHING related to your ship purple, and there were concerns about what that would do to certain effects, and how it would worsen the visual spam that existed even back then, and wanting effects to be recognizable in PVP, among other similar issues
- Can't customize the NPCs in your ship interior because ship interior maps are shared maps using a generic NPC pool, and the technical hurdle of making those uniforms customizable has not been hurdled yet.
- NPCs like those in ship interiors, or walking around ESD, are called civies, and lack custom AI, and a bunch of other stuff, to keep them as lightweight as possible. They aren't really "there" in the normal sense. Which adds further issue to the idea of customizing them.
- A full sized V'ger wouldn't fit on the game's current maximum map scale. It creates rounding errors when they try to make a map past a certain size, which they found out years ago when trying to make the Dyson zone
- Jeremy says a rainbow ship trail is more likely then a rainbow ship shield. They like to make ship shield effects have a "place" in this reality.
- Likely to make more photonic BOFFs of celebrity VAs as they get them
- No word on bringing back the Pink vanity shield. They cant just throw it into the Phoenix Box, or Mudds, since its meant to be for charity, so they need to find a way to bring it back that fits that
- When asked about Dil sinks Jeremy said, to put it bluntly "the ship train has no breaks", so neither he, nor anyone else o nthe team, is currently in a position to put much work into it. Though, currently, they are looking more favorable to limited time promotions like the dil vanity shield thing, instead of long term sinks. They still want long term sinks but the impact the vanity shield event has had on PC was good, not awesome, but good, so doing more things like that is in the thought process for the future.
- Cryptic has penciled out, though not fully designed, the idea of monster BOFFs. Allowing for getting things like a Tzenkethi BOFF with a limited powerset for its unique skeleton, or something like a Voth mech, or the Voth raptor, and possibly taking some combat pets and making them BOFFs with limited/select power sets that fit their model. Doing that brings up a lot of issues that would need to be solved, but they have kicked around the concept.
- No plans for PVP updates. PVP was never popular, so they never supported it really, which made it even less popular, and now fixing PVP would require a huge update the team probably doesn't have time for. They tried to do something different with the Competitive TFOs, but those weren't well received either. Jeremy started to say "there is a small" but got cut off by the stream ending.
