I would hope sometime in the far future that money will be irrelevant. That we all come togeather to form a stronger civilization. But its hard to see us make those bounds currently.
I have alyways said that the only thing that would shake us off our course would be a world disaster, like world war 3 in which nuclear weapons are used and there is a fallout. Destructive forces on the planet that leaves many cities in devastation.
Time will only tell.

Seriously doubt it ever will. Even after WWIII, the world would look more like Fallout 3 than people building FTL drives.
I only see the abandonment of money possible, when we could have unlimited resources. Humanity simply needs money to fairly distribute the running-out resources of Earth. So when the replicator is invented, perhaps then we are a little closer to an utopian post-capitalist society.
But I doubt anyone wants to work anymore then. Most of the people would be on a life-long holiday, where they have everything and do nothing. Global stagnation.

I don't see it happening. It's human nature to assign value to items, and to barter for goods. Even though in Star Trek: First Contact we're told that there is no money in the future, there is still the use of latinum as a currency, and the elusive Federation Credits.
