As a former Navy man who has heard the line, "The captain always goes down with his ship" many times... it would be easy to place the blame on the director (Shatner). By taking the blame, Shatner certainly fulfills that epitaph. The problem is, that mantra is flawed because it's not always his fault and that is true in this case as you have stated. Some blame. Yes. Responsible for the fate of the film and nearly the franchise... no.

I kind of feel the dislike of this movie is a bit oversold. Is it the best Trek movie around? Probably not. I'd probably not rate it the worst either, as I've watched this one far more than TMP. Might not be a popular take, but I like the idea of Sybok too. Vulcans are supposed to be more emotional than humans naturally, and it is only the cultural choice to embrace logic to a fault that makes them not. We saw Spock show hints of this emotional range at times, but as a Human/Vulcan hybrid we could never know for sure that it wasn't just his humanity showing through. Shattner didn't make a masterpiece, but I've seen far worse failures.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read and comment. Would love to hear more people’s views of “The Final Frontier” - do you think it is as bad as it is sometimes made out to be?

Honestly, The Final Frontier did have its moments. I personally don't consider it a bad movie, but it wasn't one of the better ones. In many ways, the production seemed a bit rushed and a bit "off the wall", sometimes aiming for jokes and gags instead of advancing the story. It is a movie I've seen many times and will probably continue to watch from time to time.
