You're saying the "needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few?" Isn't that a need? for people to "not leave anyone behind?" If the majority wish to go in and save a few, doesn't that fit?

"The needs of the many...." is really only applicable when making decisions that effect others. "The many" don't make decisions, especially in the scenario given. While there might be many of them, each individual makes a personal decision that will affect only themselves, just because a number of them made the exact same decision, it was still each individuals decision to make. Actually "the many", never make decisions. In a Military unit, it is "the one", the Commander that makes the decision. Yes a Commander might ask for volunteers instead of just ordering the troops to do something, but that still puts it down to "the one", each individual making their own decision. In the civilian world, it is the one, the boss (or whatever the person in charge is called) that makes the decision, if not, it is by vote, again making it "the one" (each individual voting) making a decision.
"The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one",is just a logical step that can be used when "the one" is trying to make a decision that will affect others.

The short answer to your short question... It depends.
There is not enough data, information, or details to provide an answer other than a baited response. Hypothetical questions without any clear details or information are much like hypothetical answers given to such questions. They don't amount to much and are meaningless other than to elicit further debate, baiting, or arguments.

Right, I think that makes more sense.

I thought that was clear cut haha would we send a group of 20 people to save one person who isn't influential or vital to a mission? I'm talking bout the needs of 20 people vs the needs of one person. I'm afraid that if the one person isn't influential or vital to a mission, then they might not be saved. If it is decided that the person does need saved and is worth the risk, then that person is more influential or vital to a mission than people realize.
How often have we seen in ST the captain not wanting to jeopardize the ship for one individual? Of course, ST finds a way to save them, anyway.
I can't think of a scenario where the needs of the few outweigh the needs of the many, unless those few are influential or vital to a mission.
