I have been a Star Trek Fan since the latter of TNG, and have prayed since the cancellation of Enterprise that one day, that one day Star Trek returns to our screen.

I find it disheartening to find so many of UFP's members looking at this in such a down heartened way particularly seen as the entire community has been crying out for a new series for years to bring what we all are so passionate about back to life again from the Ashes.

I realise that re-boot trek is like an ugly cousin to the shows we love but it has kept everyone interested in the show we love. I mean not everyone loved Enterprise or DS9 but yet we find ourselves rewatching the episodes now.

How would you expect CBS to make a go of anything reading this forum thread? Why should they attempt to appeal to our audience of passionate Star Trek viewers when we are so sinacle over the future of our franchise before a storyline has been even set?

I personally am going to remain positive because I hope that if the community and some new viewers get behind the new series then we can enjoy continued prosperity, additions to our existing lore and hopefully more games, more exiciting plot lines and furthermore - something we can continue to enjoy for years to come, instead of watching it being maintained by the few of us left that actually care watching others attempt to revive doing little but complain about the end content.

CBS may not be perfect - but I will say this much at least they are trying to give us a chance to continue loving the franchise we grew up with.

So long may I hope this promising talk from CBS continues and I pray they read the more positive aspects of our chatter, not the cynicism.

I am looking forward to this. I will enjoy wondering about the focus. Will it be another Enterprise? Will it be another Voyager? Prime universe or new, it will still be a fun adventure. If they create stories just as well as STO does, even that will be interesting, though I expect more.

There seems to be an assumption that it will be in the JJ universe, I gather from what I read this is because all the new fans, and the new fans will know the JJ Universe better yardy, yardy yar. My question is would the new fans recognise whether or not it is the prime timeline or the alternate timeline? I have a hunch that they wouldn't notice, and for some reason I have a hunch that CBS would have the same hunch. So I think it will be based in the prime timeline.

Though i'm actively attempting to resist everyone's moodkill mentality.

I think the reason that so many people aren't optimistic is two fold.

Firstly, CBS have not handled Star Trek particularly well and a lot of fans were disappointed by reboot movies (although made by Paramount). Secondly, CBS haven't given enough information yet to get people excited, all we really know is that the Executive Producer is partly responsible for some of the least Star Trek like Star Trek ever made.

They should attempt to appeal to us as they are a business that wants to make money and a good way of doing that is by making your customers happy. Ultimately though CBS needs to realise that a lot of long term Star Trek fans are disenchanted with the current state of Star Trek. Even when fans were willing to fund a new Star Trek series themselves CBS weren't willing.

It's great that you want to remain positive, I don't think it's that most people here don't want to be positive, it is that the most recent Star Trek offerings have not been good and a lot of people don't want to get their hopes up for fear of those hopes being crushed. I really hope it will be great but I'm not going to assume that it will be before I know more about it.

I agree in so much that JJ Trek hasn't specifically helped the cause for the Trek we know and love and has made a severe hash of the storyline! However, some middle ground between the two I'm personally hoping for and being optimistic for so that hopefully new fans will come and that we are all kept happy as well.

They'd be daft to ignore the demands of their most passionate fans to appeal the greater public!

All the haters, each and every one...are going to have to get over it.

They've gotten too comfortable with having Star Trek a certain way that they mistakingly believe that the franchise is tailor made and catered directly for them. Because of their refusal to move with the times and to accept what was before Star Trek was dull, lifeless, repetitive...BORING.

Obviously, alot of you don't like the new material because you're too stuck in your own ways. You're old, dinosaurs. Stick to your TNG era bubbles and don't ever come out. Keep reliving the glory days of Picard, Sisko, and Janeway to your hearts content. Where everything relied on technology and everything was sterile, lifeless. Where you constantly drone on and on about how great Voyager and the Dominion War were.

While you're at it, don't forget how "great and good" Generations, Insurrection, and Nemesis were as well. Because those stories really helped take Star Trek to another level of importance and respect of the science fiction community haven't they?

In all honesty, and if I lose my command for this then so be it. You haters are a cancer. You don't like that Star Trek has evolved into something different and have moved on without you. For you naysayers saying it hasn't brought in fans you're absolutely wrong. People who like the new movies do watch and like the old shows. They're better people than you because at least they have objectivity and don't nag and nag and nag when they don't have their own way.

And last I checked, the last two movies alone have outgrossed anything from 1994-2002.

Get out. Just leave, Go to Doctor Who or Babylon 5 or Galatica. Star Trek used to be about optimism and objectivity. But you sorry pathetic sods are ruining it. Get. Out.

A new Star Trek TV series is something I believe *all* of us will watch... as it is new and it is Star Trek. Good or Bad, we will watch it.... if it isn't a stupid streaming subscription.

My biggest concern is the method by which CBS plans to air this... subscription? This does not bode well. Why? TV Networks do not make shows just to make shows. They make shows to make money. If the series doesn't bring in money, it gets the axe. Thus my worry is that whatever this new Star Trek TV series is... that it may end up like "Firefly". No matter how good it is or how much the fans love it... if it doesn't bring in the money, it will not live for long.

Hopefully some CBS executive with some common sense will recognize that whatever bean counter statistician gave them the number that a streaming subscription would generate more revenue than view-rating TV advertisements is an idiot.

Please CBS... do not let this new Star Trek become another Firefly...

P.S. Comparison to Firefly is because I want the new TV series to be *just as or better*.

Yeah, the streaming service thing has me scratching my head. Had this discussion with a couple of folks at work and we were trying to hash out some rough numbers to see what the motivation might be...

... and I have no idea. Even if there was an explosion of subscribers (Like 200% growth), it alone cannot justify a season of a modern sci-fi show.

I must be missing something, as I assume some basic math was done.

Almost anything that television executives do makes me scratch my head.

Limiting the show to run on their paid streaming service may be a desperate attempt to get more subscribers. As I previously said, it would be a dumb move by CBS to limit their audience like that.
