Once again I thought they went back to being way too much Burnham centric. It seems nothing happens on that ship without her being somehow involved. This has got to stop or I believe people will eventually lose interest.... at least I know I will.
There were, however, some interesting side stories- such as the unification of the Klingons, Tilly's freak-out in the captain's chair, and of course, Section 31 (which I agree should NOT be a well-known fact).
I would also have liked more scenes with Pike. His role was minor in this episode and he is, after all, the captain of the ship. We did not see much of Saru, either.
I am hoping for a slightly better episode next week.

I share this feeling with you too. Burnham is just boring to me, but I'm too curious to see how the other characters will progress, which is why I still will keep watching Disco.

I don't disagree with that. Good or bad, this is what we got. I also believe the new Picard series will be similar, no ensemble cast.

So i really enjoyed that episode.
1). The Klingons are playing out EXACTLY like i've been telling people on Reddit and other places for months. S1 they were a wild rabble of 24 great houses all in-fighting, with different ship designs etc.
Now they are becoming unified under one banner by L'rell and have started to develop a standardized military, starting with the familiar D7 being revealed as the latest ship design combining knowledge from all the houses.
And there was even mention of the growing of hair, suggesting the look they had in S1 was something akin to a religious order look, following T'kuvma's as if he were a cult leader.
2). Good bit of Klingon backstabbing going on though, as we'd expect from past trips to the homeworld in TNG. Nice to see there's still plenty of dishonor to go about!
3). Tily's story is pretty weird, but i guess it's there to tie the spore drive into a current plot and deal with the whole issue of "is the network sentient, or is there something else living in it etc." Are the "ghosts", including that of the Doctor from S1 really as friendly as they first seem?
4). A bit more info on Spock's family past, but i'm wondering what the hell Burnham did to upset him so badly? Kill his dog? Steal his food? Mess up his latest game of Kal-toh?
Kinda nice how Amanda is pretty close to the only other time we saw her in ST09, sort of ties the universes together a bit i find.
5). Burnham wasn't really central to the episode tbh, and she has definitely toned down the know-it-all attitude this season I feel. She's not always right, and she'll sometimes even follow orders like in Ep2!
6) Ah S31....the secret everyone knows about. Or do they?
I mean we know Georgiou knew of them in S1 and i think Ash Tyler was even aware of them back then. But are they known about as widely as everyone assumes, seeing as just seeing a black badge is hardly proof of a shadow organisation on it own.
I'm guessing everyone knows about SF Intelligence, but S31 is an offshoot and much more secretive.

I'm still hopeful, TNG and DS9 were mediocre 1st and 2nd Season and Enterprise didn't pick things up till the 3rd season, you never know, then again I am a hopeless optimist, who can't even watch the show till its out on bluray.

Hold on, you're shifting the burden of proof here, you made the claim that it doesn't appeal to modern viewers, the burden of proof is on you to support such a claim!
But lets look at some review sites for fan opinions, I will be comparing it to The Orville, which does use the old Star Trek formula, just not necessary the same storytelling, as it is a comedy.
Rotten Tomatoes, gives Discovery an average of 51% liked, while The Orville gets 91%. Critics generally like Discovery over The Orville, but they aren't generally fans, and audience numbers make you money, opinions of critics don't.
Metacritic paints a similar picture, Discovery gets 4.6 and 5.3 (season 1 and 2 respectively), while The Orville gets 8.3 and 7.8 on the user score.
We could get a better comparison of things if CBS released all the viewing figures for Discovery.

My comment was based on the trends of tv shows that seem to be popular the past few years. Popular shows tend to be darker, more cinematic, and the writing is more elementary.
You are right though, we will never know how popular Disco is unless CBS releases numbers but none of the streaming services release numbers so I don’t blame them.
As far as The Orville goes, you are correct that the fan reviews give it high marks but the ratings (at least in the US) tell a different story. While I think it will get a season 3 because it’s Seth McFarlane, it’s unlikley to go beyond 3 seasons unless the ratings dramatically improve.

I don't think its really worth comparinng the Orville and DSC tbh.
Discovery is doing something new and a bit different which every Trek incarnation got flak for in the past, but it does have very high production values and some pretty good story going in places. Plus it's aimed at a modern TV audience who are more expectant of short seasons with high quality episodes and perhaps a more mature subject mater being shown on screen.
Orville by contrast is just trying to mimic older Trek shows and give people the same thing they always wanted; in my view it's playing it safe by being a parody and not really doing anything we've not seen before.
And i kinda feel like a lot of people latched on to the Orville simply as a rebellion to what they saw in DSC being different from what they had gotten used to. I wonder if Orville was up against something like late-season DS9 would it fare as well?
In my view Orville will grow tired pretty quick as there's only so many ways you can try to comedy-fy the Trek tropes we all know, and Sci-fi shows these days are ten a penny so you've gotta have something really special to keep momentum. DSC at least has the Trek brand behind it, not so sure about Orville.
But generally I'm ignoring a lot of the "vocal" complaints around the internet because it's pretty clear there are those with some serious brigading operations going on and trying to push a specific hatred of DSC. Youtube comments and dislikes are pretty much becoming an echo chamber for hate groups it seems and rumours are nearly all being pushed based on some questionable evidence and a lot of guesswork, all on top of pretty subjective points of view.
From my own circle of friend the majority seem to enjoy the show, and they enjoyed all the previous ones too. So to me the over the top bitterness seems to not really gel with what i'm actually surrounded by and seeing daily.
