I was not interested in playing EVE back when it was subscription only, the recent change to have a free to play model allowed me a chance to give it a try. My first dive in didn't go well, the tutorial was a mess and I just found the UI confusing, so I gave up. Eventually, I tried again and learnt a bit more on how to do things, did all the starter missions, I was already in the corporation for the UFP (Kassa Stellar Dynamics), which I started to help out with industry and mining.
Having played with a fair few members and receiving plenty of help with progressing, I have started to get the hang of how things work. For me, I prefer to play the game in the background, doing mining and slotting industry, since it runs quite well for me alongside other games and I have no issue with looking over at the progress. Combat in the game feels a little too clunky for my liking, possibly overly complicated in how turret tracking effects how well you can hit, as well as range being a big factor, of course, in a group, I have no problem with combat. There are many kinds of weapons I haven't tried out because I don't have the skills for them, as well as possibly lots of tactics I don't know.
My feeling for this game is, if you are going to play it as a new player, join a group and play with others, learning is so much easier that way. Being a good solo player, I can only imagine, is going to suit the more experienced players, same with exploring the lower security zones. I think a free to player is going to struggle going on an adventure into nullsec on their own. Of course, there is always a risk of getting attacked in higher security areas, but it becomes easy to figure out who to avoid and what to look out for, on my screen when mining, I have a separate overview tab for player ships and always set my destination to a station I am using as a hub for that area.
This is not a game I ever thought I would play, but if you can find the right group of people, you can have an enjoyable experience. Like most online games, the story is what you make of it, in my perfectly neutral opinion, the UFP has some friendly players, so if you aren't playing yet, join in! There is still plenty to do as free to play.

I've on multiple occasions decided to give it a true try for a while but always intimidated by the amount of time that is needed to become relevant and quit playing in short order. I'm hoping the meta-game is as immersive in Star Citizen as it is in Eve.
Also I guess I've not still developed that sense of who/what to avoid, being ganked in a capsule right out of a gate in fairly high sec was just frustrating.

I'm looking forward to SC too, but with this pace... we might be in beta by the end of the decade. However, while Eve can look overwhelming and demanding I think that even brand new players can have fun and enjoy. For solo players it is a bit more difficult but as we have a good and friendly group running Eve I don't think you'd find it frustrating if you join us on TS and run with us. IMHO, players can get decent number of skillpoints in a few months, at least enough to run L3 missions solo. PvP is completely different issue and as one of our most experienced guys (Adhar) would say "If there is a fair fight in EVE someone scr*w*d up"... well he said it in a more polite way but I think this interpretation probably sounds more appropriate. Anyway, almost every evening in your (our) timezone you'll find people running missions, discussing fits, sharing experiences, giving advice etc... and sometimes we get ganked, sometimes we gank back...

As for someone like me who likes just to mine felt really limited with their f2p system. Wasnt going to give them money just so I can train a couple more skills and able to use a certain ship to get better yields. Whatever.

With mining, you are limited to just the Venture when free, which is a shame, but I didn't really mind, I like my little Venture! They could open up a few more ships for people who want to mine F2P, even if they just add more in.

I think they may do that in the fullness of time, when they realise how popular their F2P model actually is. However, I do know from watching/reading up on fanfest that CCP are moving away from static 'roid belts in systems progressively. I'm not sure how its going to work moving forward, but I doubt they'll bring in more mining vessels just as they're about to radically change the way mining works.
I'd be delighted to offer any advice I have on understanding women. When I have some, I'll let you know.

... they're about to radically change the way mining works.
Did this mining change happen yet ?
Using my f2p mining ship I was able to earn enough to buy a PLEX in a few weeks. Its still in my inventory thou - dont really want to waste it when all I do is mine for awhile and then log out for a few weeks ! hahahah
Still in the NPC corp. SO I really only ever mined and logged out a few times.
