I am optimistically cautious about the news. IMHO, his credentials do read like a lot of flash without substance, which JJ Abrams has been criticized for too. Personally, the JJ movies were fun for me as long as I set aside all prior cannon films and tried not to let my vulcan logic announce all the plot and logic holes. :mrgreen:

Directing a Star Trek film is a tough challenge. The director has to find balance between story, characters, cannon, and the fans.

While I'm optimistic, at the same time I'm still worried. Because its a first time director.

I kinda agree with you. I don't really know what to expect from him quality-wise, but looking at the films he's been involved with so far, I'm personally not expecting much. But who knows, I'm still hoping for some change.
It would also be nice to see what's been happening in the prime universe.

I'm not surprised but I wish I was. Obviously I won't judge the movie until it is out but I can't say I am optimistic.

Firstly he doesn't seem to have directed anything, ever, I might be mistaken but he certainly hasn't directed a big budget movie before. Secondly I'm not a great fan of his past work especially his most recent work. Lastly the fact that he has described Star Trek fans as "sh*ty" and "morons" and invited them to "F-off" in discussions with fans on TrekMovie.com about Star Trek Into Darkness.

As I say I won't judge anything until I have seen it but to me it looks like a questionable decision even if it isn't a surprising one.

I don't intend to watch this film, I am far more interested in what happened after Voyager than starting all over again in some alternate universe that I'm not interested about. As for this director though, as Chris has said, he hasn't directed anything in the past and to be given such a big title for his first role as a director is somewhat odd.

If this doesn't work out and the film flops, what is likely to happen to any future films?

The same route every other Franchise Killer goes through. Either nothing else ever being produced relating to Trek because of the sheer stink left by the final film, or a 7-20 year gap and another reboot.

Heh, I love seeing Nemesis in that list. Still haven't made it all the way through a second viewing...

Re-read the article, I should be commenting on that and not franchise killers.

The article is perhaps the most even review I've read on announcement thus far. Kudos to Solace for keeping an even tone where others are already looking for torches and pitchforks.

I think the mainstay have instead decided throw theirs toys out of the pram yet again.

At least they're not going to go visit 'god' again.

(... and man do I hope I don't have to eat those words in a couple years time...)

Thank you for the article Solace! Though I've been entertained by the previous JJ Treks, I concede that any past element of Trek is really lost on them - like the transport across the quadrant technology. If you read carefully this new director is also partially responsible for the development of JJ's previous two Trek films as a co-writer. So whether bad or god, like much of you, I am optimistically cautious at this change.

Honestly, I believe it's the fans that are going to bring about the continuity of the prime trek universe with fan made films like Renegade.
