Looking at the latest news on NASA's website I came across this interesting article.
Its seems that a star went Supernova in January this year in the M82 Galaxy, now this may seem like old news. But NASA's Chandra X-Ray Observatory has provided new data on stringent constraints on the environment around one of the closest supernovas discovered in decades. The Chandra results provide insight into possible cause of the explosion.

It went Novae millions of years ago? From the way I was reading the article it seemed like it went Supernova in January this year? Thanks for clearing that up Curzon ^_^

Well the observation is new, but since the star is 12 million light years away, that means it took light from it 12 million years to reach us, so anything that appears to have just happened actually happened 12 million years ago. Still the data they have collected could be quite interesting. This is one of the closer supernovas that have been recorded.
We wouldn't be able to tell what's happening anywhere NOW unless we could actually go there.

Indeed, I completely forgot about the travel time of light vs distance (feel embarrassed now xD).
Still like you said the results could be very interesting and may further the understanding of our own sun, signs of imminent matter expulsions or collapse.
