This morning, I got a weird message from someone named Cooking Fat@crici1701 on one of my alternate sto characters. This alternate character in called S'nato, a Fed-allied Rom who is currently a member of UFP 2nd fleet. But the message I got is treating this alt as my main character and wanting to know if I want to have my 'alts' join the other UFP fleets (at least that is the way it seems, they never once mention the UFP) and what my future plans with the fleet are, whether I will stay or leave the fleet. And they want me to respond in 48 hours.

Here is a copy of the message:

Hello s'nato,

We are writing to you in regards to any
alternate characters you have on Star trek online, we have a great fed
fleet and it would be a pleasure to see your other characters Join us.
We have much to offer you in our fleets, do you know that we offer a
discount for people who help out the fed/kdf fleet to move up faster.
This means you can get that fed/kdf ship you always wanted faster, or
that fancy new console you have your eyes on. We also do fleet
activities on both our fleets which include PvP's, Fleet PvE's and
Kitty's fleet party's that are held on Risa or DS9. With lots of games
and prizes.

I truly believe that everything that we do and everyone that we meet is
put in our fleet for a purpose. There are no accidents; we're all about
different spices - if we're willing to play and have fun in our fleet,
trust our positive instincts and not be afraid to take risks or wait
for some miracle to come knocking at our door. This is a chance for you
to join the (fed/kdf) fleet and help us make a difference, it won't be
easy but we need you to join us... Please reply to us within 48 hours
of this message so we know what your plans are if they are to remain
with us or not.

I can't find anyone by this name in the UFP 2nd fleet (though I haven't yet checked the other UFP fleets). Is this a genuine message from the UFP or a fake? Is this player really a member of the UFP? It seems suspicious to me and I don't plan on responding through the STO message system, but I am posting here to find out if it is genuine and to respond here.

I have a total of 10 STO characters, 7 of which are UFP fleet members already and I plan to keep them right were they are. My main character isn't S'nato@Sanatoba, its Sanatoba@Sanatoba and he is UFP all the way (with even the UFP badges and hull markings). As for my other three characters, they have been in other fleets since the rule against multiclanning was lifted for UFP members. I wanted to expand my horizons a little and explore what other fleets were like these days. While I would like to have those 3 other characters stay in those fleets if possible, if it comes to it, I am more likely to have those 3 other characters leave those other fleets and join the UFP, but only if necessary. I have no plans whatsoever of leaving the UFP or its STO fleets.

Looks like someone trying to recruit for their own fleet by spamming other players. Going after players' alts rather than going for their main is an interesting twist though, I haven't seen that in these spam messages before.

Anyway, Definitely not from UFP.

That @handle has never been associated with the UFP for as long as I can go back through Invite requests, and I know for a fact that is not from any of our community's volunteer staff. Any important information that you receive in-game (Roll call notices, etc) will always be posted on the forums in addition to any in-game mails. As the majority of administration of our in-game assets is run on the forums, you will never be contacted exclusively by in-game mail.

It looks like you just got that mail at random. As we have no multi-clanning rule anymore, you are free to join whatever fleets you wish to in Star Trek Online. That being said, I'd be weary about getting involved with Cooking Fat, if not just for the sketch-factor of the name.

I was looking in my messages inbox and have found previous messages from him about other fleet stuff in the past. He just never mentions which fleet he is from. I guess I just figured he was from one of the other three fleets/communities I am a part of. And he has never addressed me directly before so I have never responded to him before or thought much about it. Maybe it IS someone from my other fleets trying to recruit more of my characters to their fleets (which isn't likely to happen). Or it is someone else trying to recruit me....

Already changed my passwords, just to be safe....

By the way Cehus, love the avatar. Don't think I've seen that one before.

K, I found him. Turns out he is a fleet leader of the Orion Liberty Fleet, which I have one Kling-allied Rom character in. I guess he must of thought he was addressing me through my main character and is trying to recruit more of my characters to their fleets. I've never hid the fact that I was multi-clanning, and never saw any rules against it on their website, so hopefully it isn't a problem. But if it is, guess in a day or two I'll have one more character joining the ranks in the UFP fleets as I am not going to be joining yet another group.

Still kind of strange though that this guy never mentions the fleet name in any of his messages and that before looking him up on their roster, I had no idea at all who he was, little lone that he is now one of the higher ups in the Orion Liberty Fleet.

Most mail are accessible through all alts on an account. He likely sent it to the character that's actually in his Fleet, but you opened your mail through a different character.

Fleet mail should only appear on characters in that fleet, although sometimes it goes a bit funny and you end up with them on all you characters. Normally, when functioning properly, you should only see them from the relevant fleet for that character

UFP mails usually identify the sender within them or at the end, so you know who to contact on our forums/TeamSpeak if you have a question. But normally the only ones sent from the UFP are about Roll Call, we don't send others out very often unless we need to.

There is absolutely no issue with you being in multiple STO fleets. I suppose one potential downside of being in more than one fleet is having to be on the receiving end of communications from two different groups which I imagine could be a pain

Yeah, getting so many messages, so much info can be a pain, but you learn to deal with it. However, it seems that Liberty Fleet and Orion Liberty Force are no longer allowing multiclanning. They just haven't updated their website in order to reflect this change yet. So I now will have another character joining the ranks of the UFP Klingon fleets.

PS do I need to get a new forum sig? Your's are all new and mine isn't showing up fully. Haven't been on the site enough lately do to life issues and internet trouble to keep up on some of that.
