I didn't believe it when I read the first article, I thought surely it was some bad joke. But after all the reports started coming in, it was worse then a bad joke, it was true. He was young and full of promise, taken far too soon. My heart goes out to his family, friends and many fans. Rest in peace Anton, you will be remembered.

I'm saddened at this loss, he was one of three actors that I could stand and truly enjoyed in the new movies. He will be greatly missed.

A shame for such a young actor to die, I don't think I have seen him act but I have heard he was good at what he did and with so much of his life left, could have become an amazing actor. 2016 isn't a very good year at all, may he rest in peace.

Life is the most precious thing and it's important that we all do our best to use whatever tools we have to ensure our safety, you can never eliminate the chance of having an accident but you can do your best to limit it.

Regardless of whether it was an appropriate comment or not, it would have made little difference in this case, at least if the reports are accurate. Apparently, there is a recall on the model of vehicle Yelchin owned relating to problems with it's parking brake

It's not the parking break, it's the... not sure about the term, gear shift? The thing you use to switch from Drive to Park to Neutral.

That's why the car was in Neutral with the engine running, when he likely intended it to be in Park with the engine running. Sounds to me like he intended to stop for a moment to grab his mail.

It is the called the shifter, as it was the electronic shifter that did this. A very good reason why I think if I ever own a car, I'll have pay extra to have a stick.

Also it was a "voluntary" recall on this particular version and not only that, it isn't quite certain (at least at the time of my reading) that it was the same model as the recall. Though, we all know it probably was.

Sucks that he's dead and worse because he was a budding actor. I'm at least hoping they'll give him a classy send off of like fighting off space terrorists or something.

Yelchin had a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee which have been blamed for numerous incidents since they apparently don't make it especially obvious to the driver when they are in park, the issue isn't with the parking brake (which a lot of news sources erroneously reported), it's to do with how the car alerts the driver that they haven't put it in park. It sounds like those particular Jeeps do a lousy job of letting the driver know if you are actually in park.

As ForTheGamer states there was a voluntary recall on Jeep Cherokees made between July 16th 2012 and December 22nd 2015 in which the manufacturer added additional warnings to hopefully make it less likely that someone would be unaware they had left the car not in park, they also made some changes to make it impossible for the Jeep to move in certain situations.

So far I haven't seen any reports as to whether or not Yelchin's Jeep had been sent back as part of the recall or whether or not any mechanical faults with the car had been found.

It's certainly a depressing thought that a life could be taken away because a considerably experienced car manufacturer can't make it obvious to a driver that the car isn't actually in park, surely this is the sort of thing they think of when designing cars? It will probably be put down as a case of driver error but if there have been so many incidents and the manufacturer decided to introduce a voluntary recall then surely it suggests they failed at something they really should be getting right which just makes this all the more senseless.
