Breaking news from a press junket for ST:Beyond, when JJ was asked about a possible 4th film he said:

Interesting. They are most likely waiting to see how the third film does first before making any final decisions about going ahead and making a fourth one. If this third film is less successful they most likely won't make a fourth.

I expect it will happen, the cast have already signed contracts for a 4th and Paramount registered a 4th film with the MPAA back in May as reported HERE.

Assuming that in the alternate universe the Whale Probe still exists and is heading to Earth without any major changes to it's journey then it shouldn't arrive for quite some time, Star Trek: Beyond is set in 2263 during the Enterprise's 5 year mission, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home takes place in 2286.

Yeah good point. Although Khan's arrival was expedited because of the timeline, iirc. But yes, hopefully they do something unique. I was telling a buddy that I like that they are still making big things happen that happened in the prime TOS universe (Kirk as an early CO, Khan, Ent destruction, etc). I just don't know how far they can take that, especially as you say they are about 20 years too early for most "stuff". Beyond will be a big indicator of their writing success for sure.

I guess I'll wait until I've seen Beyond before deciding if this is good news or not? I mean, if it does well, the chances of them not trying to continue making films is slim, so the fact that the next film's already on the cards isn't too surprising.

Since it's Abrams talking about it, does this mean he'll be taking back the Captain's chair now he's done with Star Wars? And is that good news? Am I asking too many questions? Possibly, but I know none of the answers yet so surely it's justified?

I think JJ will likely continue to focus primarily on Star Wars for the foreseeable future but his production company will likely continue to work on new Star Trek films with him serving as an Executive Producer.

Star Trek 4 will feature..... time travel! YAY. . .not.

Apparently Chris Hemsworth is returning as George Kirk and so the dreaded time travel convention will probably be used to bring him back into the story.

Now excuse me while I leave to bang my head against a brick wall and try to forget about time travel......

I think it's interesting though when you think about it.

Even though the JJ films are in a separate timeline/universe there will be things in the universe moving along just as they did in the Prime universe. So anything not affected directly by Nero's arrival will potentially still happen in some form.
That makes anything like V'ger, Whale Probe, Nexus etc fair game in my view.
Be interesting to see how things act out in the new altered timeline.
