I saw a meme a little while ago that pointed out the rather unfortunate shorthand for the series title...
heh. Hopefully STD doesn't catch on. DISC maybe?
Just to throw my opinion into the fray, I will say that I wasn't overly keen on the ship at first glance, and I'm still not 100% impressed with it. We've only really seen a couple of rough shots of it so far though. I'm thinking that once we get a clean shot of the ship in open space (without all the orangey brown lighting) that it will look much more aesthetically pleasing.
The whole aligned celestial bodies and gloomy asteroid, although a nice nod to 2001 A Space Odyssey, doesn't really give us the crisp gray/white impression of most starfleet ships we all know and love. Once it's out in open space without all the dodgy lighting effects, I'm thinking (hoping) it will give us all a chance to re-evalute our first impressions.
They should have stuck with a nice clean fly by shot! I choose to remain optimistic though, I won't write the series off based on a couple of shots just yet. This particular resource really helped me adjust to the Discovery actually, it looks good from several angles. https://sketchfab.com/models/a4731d9...4f7085965be9bf
Edit: I will say that I sort of wish they had gone more this direction with the ship design:

I really like the picture you posted Dentari, it feels like a Star Trek ship although the design is unorthodox. Having had a chance to examine that 3D model a little bit more, I will admit that the Discovery does look aesthetically pleasing from *certain angles. The CGI reveal didn't do the ship justice sadly.
I may have been hasty in hating on the new series with very little info so I guess I will reserve judgement until January.

The only way this works is if it is a Klingon/Federation hybrid ship. That's the only way the design makes at least some sense.
What's really weird is the saucer is like absolutely fantastic. I love that.

I'm still holding out hope that some tinkering on the design will improve it because they always do some tinkering and some Lighting changes etc after hearing what the fans think, and I had the picture of discovery on my phone and admittedly it's growing on me!

A bunch of information just got dropped by Fuller about Discovery...
https://www.reddit.com/r/startrek/co...rek_discovery/
Most important points:
- Set 10 years before TOS
- To centre around an event mentioned in TOS
- Lead character is a human female Lieutenant Commander
There's more included on the Reddit link above.
I was really, really hoping for post-Nemesis. Oh well.

If I remember correctly it was always going to be set in between Enterprise and The Original Series. Reading that article I like the idea that the lead will not be a captain and that you will see it through a different perception, even though DS9 had a Commander for a few seasons before he was promoted to Captain.

Obviously as society has marched on, so has television. Its going to be a bit strange watching this show and how it presents society, compared to TOS which, though ahead of its time, was still stuck in the 60's...
I wonder how much continuity there will be.

Hate to break it to you, but in the not too distant future, all show will be subscription based. Commercials will be gone, but instead you will have more prominent product placement during the show.
Netflix is less then 10$ a month if i'm not mistaken, in Canada we get it on Crave tv (which I already have). The streaming model also gives them the freedom to do what ever they want, don't have to worry about censors.
If you want to watch Game of Thrones, do you not have to pay for HBO?
Ahahaha. Ahahahaha.

I'm not sure I like the reference to a singular lead character that is a Lt Commander. I've got nothing against Lt Commanders but I've always seen Star Trek casts as more of an ensemble, admittedly some of that ensemble do have different sized parts but I've never seen the Captain as the 'lead' so I'm not entirely sure what this means for STD.

It's odd that its a Lieutenant Commander role. Would've thought it would be a Captain like the previous shows. Perhaps it will provide us with a different perspective since the previous Star Trek shows were based around the Captain. Reminds me of that TNG episode where there are a bunch of junior officers trying to get this one position on the bridge.

I love the fact they are trying to go in a different direction whilst keeping it trek, I'm going to look through the TOS episode lists to see what 'event' was mentioned that the show may be centred around!

Perhaps the Lieutenant commander gained the captaincy after a battle with the Klingons or such, or maybe she is a throwaway commander, given one last chance to prove herself in the hot seat

I'm not sure if I like the focus, as there will most likely be a Captain and First Officer ahead of the "main character", so I don't know what to expect. Whilst Trek has always been an ensemble, the main character has always been the Captain, will be an interesting twist.
