Hello all within the UFP!

Are there any specific tools (aside from render scale commands) or software you use to take screenshots, I have seen some the work already created by the player base and mine just don't seem to be as good.

Any help would be appreciated

It's probably not just the screenshot itself, it's using some nifty software like photoshop and doing some after-effects.

Will, something like GIMP be able to add effects to my screen shots (I am not in a position to buy/subscribe to PS at the minute).

From my own personal experience, the effects are a bit easier in PS, but GIMP still has plenty of fun stuff you can do. If you post your shot, and then an example of what you're shooting for - myself or someone can probably help. Unless you already know GIMP, in which case........rock it out!!

What kind of pictures are you looking to make? Wallpapers? For your forum signature? etc?

I personally use Photoshop, as I use it mostly day to day I have an active subscription for the service. I would recommend looking into Photoshop because it has a wide array of tools and is very versatile.

For the screenshots I create I tend to use only the RAW images that I capture in Star Trek Online. However I might touch up some areas and color balance and some other edits if I'm going for that WOW! factor.

There's fraps, don't recall using it personally but many swear by it.

I am Iooking to add a bit of WOW! to my screen shots to make a few wallpapers, and try to get a handle on editing pictures, I am hoping in the future to apply to the graphics team bit I am in need of practice first!

My daughter does have Manga Studio 5 which uses to draw and do all sorts with, but i haven't been bale to use it yet (darn kids!)

I keep both gimp & PS installed cause there's things about each I prefer doing in one over the other.

Can just post some shots that you're trying to mimic, or just google something simple like gimp screenshot enhance, and I bet there's some nifty tutorials that will get you going. Sometimes it's as simple as a plugin!

In my experience with my own screenshots, it really depends on how high you can max out your graphics settings and resolution of your picture. The program or tools themselves let you do some enhancements. Yet the original image capture is key, imho.

From our forum signature standpoint, some submitted images were 'so-so' as a full background wallpaper. But after shrinking down the size, image sharpening, and lighting effects those images went from 'so-so' to 'beautiful'. Same holds true for the avatar images submitted. Some folks have super graphics cards and their images are incredibly clear. Others seem to have pixel blur or slight bleeding of pixels that lines/boxes/colors merge together strangely on the borders of each other. Kind of the difference of viewing something in 4K vs. 480.

For adding some effects, Photoshop has been pretty good. Shadowing, Lighting, etc to all help bring out some nice aesthetic features. An example is your avatar in your signature. If you look closely, you can probably pick out the enhancements that are applied.

The adjustments you'd make would depend entirely on the image itself, each image has it's on faults/areas that could do with correcting, if you could post some of the images it'd make it easier to highlight what would need changing.
