I think that the ships of the TMP era can be categorised by one word, Graceful. Their design is a thing of beauty. I mean, just look at them Connie refit, Reliant, Oberth and Excelsior are all wonderful designs with an overall aesthetic.

It took a long time for me to get used to the Ent-D when TNG was released in the 80's because it didn't look like a star trek ship. It looked organic with all the curves and I was too young to realise that they were going for a visual style of their own. Fast forward to the DS9 and Voyager era and they were coming up with ship designs that knocked it out of the park but I defy anyone to say that the ship designs are iconic. When I think of Trek, it's always the TMP ships that springs to mind.

Interesting note there: NO refits in the scenes AND use of STO-style Beam Array ... beams by the fire arcs.

Dear gods, it's like the Federation forgot to switch their shields on. Even the Galaxy class hull got wrecked after a single beam shot.

that's exactly what I said! lol where were the shields? lol I mean even in when the Federation Fleet was fighting the Borg at Wolf 359 & Sector 001 (First Contact) you saw the shields on every ship. lol

The shield thing was something that I always wondered about and thought it was simply an oversight by the writers, but I read something recently that it was actually the producers behind it.

As the story went, the FX team told the producers they could have a choice of 2 options - either show the shields and their impacts during the battle scenes, or forget about them and have twice as many ships appearing on screen. The producers chose the ships.

At Wolf 359 not a single ship had shield effects.



In the First Contact Battle only two ships had shield effects, the Enterprise-E and a Norway that was very close to the Borg Cube.

The producers chose the ships.

It was the right decision.

I love the Excelsior class, it is my absolute all time favourite starship design. I love to run it in STO but the BOFF seating on it is just poor, really eng heavy :/ I usually end up gravitating back to my T6 Connie Refit <3

I have that conversation with my Chief Engineer all the time. At one point I thought he had sold off the shield emitters for all the good they were doing, but nope.

Shields are a price question and an artistic one, while they should have been visible you would probably see nothing else than shields ruining all the epic shots.
