Hello there,
there will be a double experience event lasting for three weeks on STO. This will start tomorrow on April 24th after the maintenance and will end on May 15th.
On the official website community manager Ambassador Kael stated:
First thing’s first: Is everyone holding up ok? This past month has been a strange year, and while we love having you folks spending your time with us in the Final Frontier, we know times can be really rough. We’ll keep offering you a place to see your friends and take your mind off of things, but we’ll try and do a little more now and then, as well. First up – we’re turning on our Double XP event for the next three weeks, on all platforms, from April 24th at 8am PT, to May 15th at 10am PT. Get double the experience points throughout the game, whether you’re leveling up that long neglected character, or starting up alt number 5,342. We’ll see you in game, Captains!
Personally I think this is a very nice thing. I have just created a new toon (girl, human, engineer) so there we go. What is more, I still need a few(!!!) skill points for my specialisation tree(s)!

Yes this 3xp stuff is actually a good chance to max out spec points on your alts or in your most wanted specs, not just for levelling!
