Moi.
But seriously, Picard is the model captain, dedicated to diplomacy and exploration, but willing to use force to defend his ship, the Federation, and the innocent when necessary.

Going with Janeway.
Gets launched to the other side of the galaxy, in a quadrant with no Federation presence or allies. Started a journey that would take 75 years to complete and actually got them home.

Janeway is a pretty awesome Captain, she ranks a little higher than the others in my books. She managed to get her crew back home, facing insurmountable odds and new alien races she's never encountered. She stuck to her training and got her crew back, with Voyager still in one piece.

This is a question I always find myself pondering over when its asked.
I think each captain has his or her own virtues, and each has skills that the others don't.
If I wanted a diplomatic envoy, I'd send Picard. He is knowledgeable, patient, wise and knows how to deal with situations through words, and when that fails - phasers.
Kirk is a bit too "in your face", both the original and the rebooted Kirk, although the original isn't quite such a tosser as Chris Pine's Kirk.
Sisko is the Captain I'd want to fight a fight, because he is a bad-ass MoFo when he's got a fight to win. He's prepared to take whatever actions are necessary to win, regardless of the costs.
Janeway is a nice mix between Picard and Sisko, although she's certainly not my favourite.
Archer... I never knew what to make of him in the first two series of ENT. He was far too "Boy Scout", as if he were trying too hard to be Kirk. However, he *really* came out of his shell during the Xindi war and the Temporal Cold War.
I'm going with Sisko, because I'm a guy who wants his Captain to be able to bring it to his foes, not talk them to death.
I'd be delighted to offer any advice I have on understanding women. When I have some, I'll let you know.

I completely agree. Captain Janeway was good in an extraordinary situation, but I still think Picard might have handled it even better.

Sisko.
Out of all the captains, he's the most competent leader. He leads from the front, he's not afraid to do something he asks others to do. All the other Captains (with the exception of JJ Kirk, although that may have changed after the events of Into Darkness) wouldn't hesitate to sacrifice those under them to achieve goals. That isn't to say that Sisko wouldn't do the same should the situation call for it, but Sisko is the type of Captain who will try everything in his power first to achieve his goal with the least damages/casualties. He cares for those that he serves with. He learns their names, knows their family. Some would argue that there needs to be some seperation, but there's a difference between professional seperation and just being cold-hearted.

Ah but the Traveller was too exhausted to do it without the help of Picard and his crew, besides if we're going to debate how the Captains got their ships back didn't Janeway use a magic Borg tunnel that took them right in to Earth orbit? Makes you wonder why the Borg never used that before...

And that's only after going back in time for a do-over. It took her four times as long to do it on her own

Picard all the way. He is the best Captain, as he is the most rounded and most ideal. Besides that, Picard had the best officers and staff. Rikker, Data, Geordi, etc are the best of the best.
I took the poll as "whom would I like to serve under, if I could choose my Captain".
Kirk would either get me killed (crewmen need to be sacrificed) or steal all the women. Sisko would likely get me killed as well in pursuing his quest destroy his enemies. Archer would be a good Captain to serve under but he'd likely get me killed by his ignorance and naivete.
Janeway is too selfish and prideful and prone to making me suffer for her 'principles'. I'd never ever forgive her for not giving up a Q to "Q" in exchange for "Q" bringing her crew/ship home with a snap of the fingers. Oh no, her principles were more important. And of course, Janeway also lost her ship and got me stranded on some desolate planet for a time. Take away my comforts and I'll throw you out the airlock! No way, Janeway.
