At the age of 41 going on in exactly one month to 42 the way I game has changed a lot over the years. I'm now at the point where pretty much if a game isn't based on something I followed as a kid I rarely give my time to it.
Here's a simple example, I like playing Conan Exiles which is a new game. But it's based on Conan which I loved watching as a kid with Conan the Barbarian and I've still the odd Conan comic. So the idea of playing in the world in a modern game is exciting to me. But when I played Ark without any such tie I played the game for 5 minutes and stopped playing it.
One thing though I love to do but never had had the chance to do properly was real old school gaming. I still own a ZX Spectrum 48K in my room. But to play on it is a pain... (if you own one or did you'll know why). Emulating games as always being an option but it's painful given that you've to setup different kinds of eulators of different games you remember, e.g. arcade, C64, etc.
So there I was last week looking up some videos on how to paint 40K miniatures and a random vid played on how to use Recalbox on an old computer... Well my mind was blown as there was the answer to something I gave up on years ago. A one shop tool that has 20 odd emulators all in one place for out of production computer systems.
Being old school they are not multiplayer across the internet so getting 2 controllers is a must if you want that.
But it's left me wondering something, I've a list of games I want to play that I remember as a kid. What games though if you were given a chance to play from your childhood would you want to play again if you could get the chance again?

I used to really like the Dizzy games that started in 1987 and the last one was released in 1992 I think. I played through all of them for many hours back in the days of the Amstrad. There was also a top down shooter called Egales Nest I think that I was quite fond of.
The original Flashback from 1992, that was brilliant. There was a remake of it but that just didn't have the charm or feel about it.

I first started gaming when I was about nine, I got given a home console that was loaded with about 99 games which where different variations of platformers. I remember my favourite being called "Load Runner", it looked like this:
Then I got given a Playstation 1 for Christmas that year by my Grandmother (much to my fathers chagrin). Thats when I really got into gaming, my first ever and most favourite game was Sypro: Year of the Dragon. I played it to death, I really hope the remastered trilogy comes to PC soon!

Dizzy was an amazing puzzle game for the time and hard! Treasure Island Dizzy was one of those fun ones. I'll have to try some of the other ones, I think I might have played Fashback but I'm not sure.
Stormy do you remember the old wheeled controller for the Atari to play Pong? They were great in the day

For a bit of a retro feel - I'm going to invoke this, the Vectrex.
It appeared in 1983 here in the UK and it was my first exposure to the world of gaming at 3 years old. The machine is still in the family somewhere, but I'm not 100% sure who has it now, where they've put it or if it even would still be in working order.

Nice to see a fellow 40k painter. My favourite game for the ZX Spectrum 48k was one called Quazatron, an isometric game where your robot slammed into other robots and then had a mini game battle to try and wrench out their circuits to upgrade yourself.

I used to play that game @Mark Okuda. Good times.
My old games? (I'm 40 so I'm in the same boat as the OP). Back on the Atari 2600 I used to play this game that was just a cross that shot at things. I played a lot of Solaris, a Star Trek game I can't remember the name of, in the mid 80's.
While I did have a NES (or Famicon as it was known in Japan where I lived), I played a few games those on and off. Anything with Star Trek and Star Wars I bought. Never liked Super Mario Bros. That was actually my last console, as I moved into PC games by 1988. Star Flight and Star Flight 2. Centurion, A Bard's Tale. Gah, this is bringing back memories of after school play and floppy drives, along with fold out maps from the game packaging. You actually had to think for yourself back then and plan things out...and not complain about failing too much. Something these younger kids don't get. No instant gratification or answers.
But then I got hooked on tabletop RPGs in 1990 and those were my bread and butter. I then gravitated to PC games that allowed more RP usually or were just space sims like I enjoyed already. (The entire X-wing and TIE Fighter series, Wing Commander series). Games that weren't just about blowing everything up without a story or some character progress/rewards, were never on my list to play. When the first MMO (that I played) Everquest came out, I was hoping for a tabletop RPG experience online. Instead, we got the first dredges of modern MMO thinking (Train!, comes to mind): 0 RP. All about being Uber/Overpowered, and finding ways to exploit and 'beat' the game, and heavy on combat.
Sometimes I do miss the simplicity of early games, but there are still good ones being produced. I don't own any old consoles or any modern one of that matter. And to be honest, I've mostly stopped playing MMOs. (this might be my last unless they come out with a deeper RPG one for Star Wars or Star Trek) I'd love too see some re-made older flight sim games like I listed, (not just remastered as they don't work on most modern PCs anymore).
But yeah, those old Atari space games definitely helped define my tastes in games today. They weren't so in-depth and you didn't have to worry about anyone's opinions on them. You just played what you liked and the games got released as is. Even if they were bad sometimes.
Gah I went everywhere again with my post, didn't I? Sorry.

Hah, Solaris... Never figured out what the story was behind that or what to actually do other than fly around randomly and shoot stuff...
Same with Defender. Fly, shoot, no idea what's going on, but hey, see how long I can survive this time

Heh, my old school gaming involved standing up in an arcade
Having said that, I used to play THE HELL out of a Renegade Legion PC game with some friends. It mimiced the tabletop game from FASA pretty well.
After that, it would be Crimson Skies on my Xbox (the big chunky ne first released). And before posting I checked on it and it has an HDMI port and oh, look, there is a spare HDMI cable ...
