    I guess until we get an official reason why he accepted promotion. Here is my working theory.

    All of the children have left the house and Jean-Luc is the only one left. A rather simple analogy but it's plausible. We know that Data is gone (at least in canon), Riker and Troi are on the Titan, and at some point LaForge and Worf both leave the Enterprise. Dr. Crusher is a bit of a mystery. Perhaps Beverly did indeed become Beverly Picard. But until otherwise stated I'm going to assume she has left the Enterprise as well. The Captain has spent arguably some of the best years of his career with these people. They became family and now they are gone.

    So like some parents who sell the house and move somewhere new after all the kids leave home. Picard accepted promotion and the fresh start & challenges that came with it.

    STO shouldn't have much difficulty working this change in. Truthfully it doesn't affect the game much at all. Simply changing Ambassador to Admiral. Even as a Starfleet Admiral he could've lobbied the Vulcan Science Council to intervene after the Hobus Supernova.

    I am very excited about this series. More so than I was about Discovery coming to TV.
