Hello everyone!

I was on the hunt for a multi-gaming community to get involved with what I stumbled on UFP. I am rather new to STO, having created an account a while ago, but I never really progressing past the first few missions due to the fact I had a hard time wrapping my mind around the best way to progress and build a character, paired with the fact I could never convince any friends to give the game a try as well. Its a shame I have never invested more time into the game over its history as I love everything to do with Star Trek. Coming across this community inspired me to give it another chance, with the hope of having a decent group of folks to play with and learn from.

A little bit about me, I am a Canadian involved in the emergency and disaster management field, hence the name SafetyMoose. I make a point of trying out most popular games, so i'm looking forward to seeing what else the community here is actively playing. I really enjoy playing Stellaris, particularly due to the ST related mods available on the steam workshop.

Anyway, its great to be here. I look forward to getting to know as many of you and I can, and hope to get involved with both STO and other games as quickly as possible.

I started about a year ago, and can understand getting lost in all the various stats, progression options and even 'currrencies'. A game this old accretes a LOT of new mechanics while older ones become less important. If I might offer advice: don't worry too much about gear, spec trees or even collecting 'cash' (selling old equipment) until you hit the level cap of 65. You can easily progress to that cap doing story episodes (missions/quests whatever you call it) and using the gear you find in them (and ships you get every 10 levels or so), just swap out lower level pieces for new stuff once in a while. You should gain about one level per story mission. And there are no 'mistakes' you can make re skills that you can't cheaply fix later. Only at the level cap will it start to matter (and unless you are a perfectionist, it will matter not that much) exactly what top tier ship you fly, which type of damage you want to do etc... I fly a Galaxy class armed with various phaser beams, not because it is the top damage dealing setup I can come up with, but because I just love the look of it

Final suggestion: do the story missions in order (the order they are in your journal) - there are some actual decent story lines.

Honestly - the reason I got into STO was because I just wanted more Star Trek in general And being able to experience a few missions with Quark or Martok or any of them, just scratches that itch of missing TNG and DS9. If you ever need anything in game, let us know - unless its some stupidly expensive lock box item, someone will be happy to hook you up.

Oh and once you hit 55 (I think...) try a TFO Saturday event (events link on the site somewhere). It might seem a bit daunting to team up with some of the old hands who outdamage you by a factor of 10 or more, but they are all nice people to hang out with and generous with advice.

I know how you feel. I tried to give STO a try while I was out of the country for the last year but the internet there was so horrible I could never make iot work. I had to resort to just re-watching TNG, VOY, and DS9 because thankfully I had them all on my SSD.

Im looking forward to taking part in any events once I hit the right level. They look like a ton of fun.
