Not going to deny that there were some shady things going on in "Old Trek" (726 Episodes, 10 Movies) but it feels way more so in "New Trek" because they practical do so in every 2nd episode.

I personally believe that in the original Trek it was more of a fantasy future. An idealistic future where everyone was accepted and humanity worked to better itself and the Federation. While any poltical organisation will do shady things that are often buried from the public eye, modern political issues didn't really make themselves apparent in older Trek (TNG etc.) and didn't really try and be a political commentary on anything.
Darkers series like DS9 during the Dominion war showed us how dark the Federation could be, especially with the revelation that S31 was behind the founders disease. Whether it was sanctioned or unsanctioned.

I agree with the video. The United Federation of Planets like any Government has it's moments where it isn't perfect. There are Officers within Starfleet that fail to uphold its ideals. At times their behavior is sanctioned by Command and at others their behavior is a result of a choice to violate their oath and betray the uniform.
Most of the time in "Old Trek" I would say that it was more so the exception than the rule. The authors argument regarding Captain Janeway's actions in the Delta Quadrant, is flawed in my opinion. The U.S.S. Voyager was stranded more than 70,000 Light years from Federation Space. At the time it was believed that Voyager was the only Federation Starship in the Delta Quadrant. Whereas Captain Janeway did her best to uphold the ideals of the Federation and the Prime Directive. There were instances where she had to make exceptions in order to survive & eventually get her crew home. This isn't inconsistent with other Starfleet Captains making exceptions when warranted and or necessary.
Why do we see more of it in Discovery & Picard?
Well in my opinion both in the Star Trek Universe and our own. It's a reflection of the times. Discovery takes place early on in Starfleet's History and in a time period where things weren't as ideal. Picard takes place in a time period where it has survived the Dominion War and a terrorist attack. These events have changed Starfleet and the UFP. Both relate to the sociological and political changes that we are seeing in todays climate as well.
Star Trek has always been a mirror for what is going on in the real world. It's just the image has changed to reflect where we are now vs where we were in 1966, 1987, 1993, 1995, & 2001.

Sounds like ANY massive political organization to me. Nothing sinister about it. It is what it is.

From watching ENT series humans wanted some peaceful exploration and meeting new people Archer found out real quick how deadly the galaxy is, which helped form the idea of Federation of Planets. (as an interstellar union of planetary governments that agreed to exist semi-autonomously under a single central government based on the principles of universal liberty, rights, and equality, and to share their knowledge and resources in peaceful cooperation, scientific development, space exploration, and mutual defense.)
Perhaps from starlogs of captains through the time made starfleet realize perhaps their outlook needs to change a bit, so what looks shady may just be that adjustment. Yeah, we see more of this shady ds9 and with S31. imo anything with s31 is bit crazy - organization of fanatics thinking they are judge and jury of any situation regardless how far they will go to achieve their objective.
