That is an obscene price for a single character unlock that’s not even full rep completion and is only one of the 12+ each toon has. You need to spend 36,000 zen to do them all, that’s like buying the legendary bundle ffs!!!!

My guess is that this is preceeding the announcement of a new reputation to grind in the near future, and their hope is that some people bite just to have bragging rights that they pick up whatever new toys that rep offers a few weeks ahead of everyone else. The same idea already exists for events, and as long as they continue to have a free path to do the reps like they always have in the past, that will be the path that I and I imagine most people will continue to follow. Rep mark farming is probably the easiest income grind in the game today, taking less than a month to get to T5 and unlock at least one type of each goodie offered (or half that once you've done it once on your account) if you just do the daily rep project every day. Everyone is still on their own to grind out T6, which is another month regardless.

If some people have the money to burn and can't even be bothered to invest a few weeks running a bit of what will be the newest content that everyone will be running anyway, more power to them. If people are that impatient and choose to buy the existing reps, more power to them as well and please don't mind me as I mentally picture those people being slapped upside the head repeatedly for such a pointless investment. Even the best-in-slot rep gear isn't so powerful that you can't get by with placeholder gear until you unlock it.

Honestly, I agree with the MMO termination thoughts. You don't make this type of decision unless you aren't making enough elsewhere. Year of Klingon is probably the last thing we're going to get for new content probably. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Going to have to vehemently disagree with you there, Nova. This will simply fragment the player base into "Those with money" and "Those without money" farther than it already is (considering that there's a Grand Canyon wide divide already).

This is a pure cash grab by Perfect World Entertainment. It's why I quit STO, a game I have spent hundreds of dollars on and have been playing since its closed beta and was a Collectors Edition buyer on launch.

They're milking their player base with Disposable income without actually adding value to the game other than 'Bigger DEEPS' to those that chase the dragon.

Hate to say it, but STO is dying financially, and this is just another sign in a long line of signs pointing in that direction.

I don't think even if it was account-wide with a cheap price that this would be justified. I hear 0 NEW content dev talks (revamping existing content is not new content) and just new ways to invoice customers. This is feeling much less like a game to me personally.

Either way, I hope people look around at other games as well before trying to justify these ridiculous amounts Cryptic/PerfectWorld/StarTrekOnline imposes. Slowly and surely every aspect of this game is invoiced and at the same time content development is zilch. I'm not saying there are no other pay 2 play games out there - but there are many others which are not.

Kindly explore options before you commit your wallet to anything. At the end of the day if the purchase makes you happy whatever the decision, that's your happiness. Personally though, I find it difficult to endorse this game to anyone.

It's a big deal, because monetizing everything in the game while not actually producing new content goes to show that the business of STO is not healthy. PWE and Cryptic are likely 'cash poor', and COVID likely didn't help matters.

They're milking their player base who still has disposable income and are willing to part with it, while there hasn't been a substantial content update since the Dominion expansion 2 years ago, it's just been small one or two-shot episodes with big promises of 'revamping' older content that no one plays anyways to placate fan demand that's been simmering for years.

STO is not long for this world. I give it 2 years tops, and "Year of the Klingon" will likely be its last major update.

Players who go the buyout option (unless trying to avoid missing out totally, like being on holiday when and event runs) are in my honest opinion missing a more than a few screws.
The game is so easy and the events needed to grind for prizes or reputations so simple and tbh quick each day that the thought of buying out is completely illogical at the least, and a downright waste of money at the worst.

The fact the game (and this is rife in mobile gaming) is now going heavily down this route is very worrying I feel.

Firstly because it's lazy on the devs part. It makes them money for essentially bugger-all work. They don't need to design new content or art or anything and yet can make the same money as a T6 ship off every sale of a buyout.
So the game makes money but it's making it out of thin air basically. That's a really lazy, half-arsed way to develop a game; even more so when you look at the utterly crap amount of new content we actually do get.
It's basically going into seriously low-effort mobile gaming territory.

Secondly, because it shows that as devs they really don't care if you play their content! As long as you pay them you can ignore all their hard work. What sort of team putting effort into the game they supposedly love would want to encourage players to just skip everything?

Thirdly, it's promoting a bad choice for players to make. If you're gonna play a game; play the dammed game. If you are skipping the content just to be first to get something then what are you actually doing playing? So you get a rep set or event item weeks before the rest of us.....wow. Now you'll just be back to running endless repeats of ISE's or sitting chatting in ESD whilst everyone else is playing the new content.

An additional point that some miss with things like this though; how long until they make paying for progress the only way to get ahead without ridiculous grinding?
They can easily make it so that the grind for items/events/reps takes so long a so be impossible or so long it's more appealing to pay. This is a very slippery slope to start down....

This is not a good sign for the game. It's dying imo and they are bleeding the whales for anything they can before running off with the profits.

I think this is possibly the first early sign of the death knell for STO, I can almost hear the bells ringing.

Value for money this is not, not by a longshot. It's a pure and simple cash grab disguised as a convivence, which in itself isn't very convenient when all is said and done. I can see some newer players falling for this one, but the vets are going to need a new batch of BS sensors fitted, as I think everyone's just exploded with this news.
