I enjoyed the episode, for the most part. Though I'm not fond of how they handled the whole Burn storyline, I think that they ended it in the most Star Trek way that they could. I don't buy a holodeck being able to see and manifest a personality from a Trill symbiote, but whatever. Burnham did come across as a James T. Kirk type, and I liked how the season wrapped things up. It does feel like a series finale though.

Exactly this. I asked myself a few times, "Is this the last episode?".

Overall I really enjoyed the ending, and I feel like season 4 is almost a reboot. We now get to watch them rebuild the Federation and get back to exploring.

I really enjoyed the episode. As has already been said in this thread, there were shades of Kirk in Burnham this episode and earlier in the season, when they went to rescue the Tikhov, I felt shades of both Picard and Sisko in Burnham's command style so I'll be interested to see how this develops.

I've never really been that big of a fan of Saru, although I can see why people like him but for me I'm hoping the promotion of Burnham to captain will put Saru into a more supporting role.

I was a bit disappointed to see that Tilly, after holding the first officer post effectively then recognising her limitations and passing command over to Burnham has been relegated back to science ensign, would have liked to see her get promoted to Lt j.g.

Especially the Captains one, I feel that after this season Burnham has earned her place as Captain of Discovery.

Liked the episode but I have observations.

The whole starbase and fleet's weapons couldn't stop Discovery? No wonder the federation fell apart.

How many different ways does Burnham's new uniform have to tell people that she's the captain? There are four rank insignia with the collar, epaulettes and badge which is a bit over the top for me.

Did anyone else notice that Tilly went from Discovery Engineering uniform (Copper colour) to new Science teal? Also, I didn't notice anyone else in the crew wearing red apart from Burnham but that could be because I was concentrating on Tilly and Culber (Medical uniform looks good IMHO).

After watching the turbolift fight scenes and the scale of the space inside Discovery, I think that it was built using Gallifreyan Time Lord technology. I was half expecting to see the Omega 13 device.

Other than those niggles aside, I'm really looking forward to season 4 as it's implied that they're getting back to exploration rather than saving the universe every year.

Honestly, not sure if that's a starbase in the center, or a repurposed ship? It seemed to me like during the fight that they use the "home fleet" for defense more than the base weaponry. I'm sure we'll find out more later.

I was chatting with a friend about the captain's uniform, and it is possible that the epaulets are signifying starship command perhaps? Kind of like how in STO, the white shoulders of a captain's uniform show that they're not just a captain in rank but also entrusted with command. I thought that was an interesting head canon explanation.

DS9 worked pretty well with the main char being a mere Commander for the first three seasons, imho.

Captain Michael Burnham.

The circle is complete and finally the main character of the show sits in the Captain's Chair. I am happy to see this the long build to it has finally paid off and as others have said before me. This feels like a series finale. Because in many ways that's what it is. I expect a much different show in season 4 and I am looking forward to it.

If I'm going to nitpick on the effects though I have to agree with Kyuu. The turboshafts being so large and contained within a forcefield make no sense to me. Unless we're saying that Discovery is closely related to a TARDIS. It makes little sense. That's a lot of wasted and unnecessary space on a starship that has a crew of around 200 and only 17 decks. I have the same issue with the warp & data cores. But short of a retcon we're going to be left scratching our heads.

Other than that I thought it was a solid episode that shows Captain Burnham has come a long way and that Discovery is in good hands jumping forward.

Agreed, however, Sisko may have been a commander for the first 3 seasons, but he was the station commander, a position that is analogous with captain in that situation.

It's not so much to do with the rank itself, more the position of the main character.

I have this gut feeling the Enterprise was destroyed in The Burn, I think next season Starfleet will commission a new class of starship with a spore drive as part of the reconstruction efforts and the 1st new ship of this class will be the enterprise.

Also, I wonder what will happen to the and organs, think they'll try to rejoin the UFP?

I couldn't disagree with you more! I thought that Saru showed horrible judgement as a Captain, and is in no way qualified for the admiralty. I think that he's better suited to being an ambassador, or maybe a professor at Starfleet Academy.

I agree on the ambassador link he would be a good liaison between people he seemed to have a connection to President T'Rina in Unification III I guess we will eventually find out
