The long teased and predicted Section 31 story staring Michelle Yeoh as Emperor Philipa Georgiou is finally confirmed. Although not a full series instead we are getting a 'Special Original Movie Event' event. Which although not fully explained does seem to indicate the first Star Trek Movie in over 6 years and potentially the first prime timeline movie in more than 20 years.

Part of me is kind of wondering if that's what they're thinking - Matalas said the other day a Legacy series is not in active development, but he didn't say it wasn't happening either. I think he knows all too well what didn't work with the first 2 series of Picard and going down the path of the third is what the fans wanted.

Now that S31 has been spun off into a movie idea rather than a series, I think that's probably for the best as I don't think it would have the legs they thought it might even with Yeoh heading it up. The Starfleet Academy series I reckon is more likely to be a limited series and with Discovery coming to an end, that leaves SNW as the flagship and given how well its been received, it would be madness if they didn't at least consider the idea of a spin-off leading out from the TNG era, be it either with the Titan or perhaps a new Enterprise.

I'd like to see Shaw being bought back somehow - anyone got a spare golem laying around?

Since I stopped watching Discovery somewhere in Season 2, I'm more likely not to watch this but I will at least wait for more details before making up my mind for sure.

I'm wondering how much the decision to flip to a movie is influenced by the fact that Yeoh is now an Oscar winner. Usually that label comes with a huge spike in pay for the actor, and given Star Trek is already pricier than a lot of shows given all the futuristic set builds, CGI and other SFX, an Oscar-sized payroll probably priced it out of TV territory and thus the movie route which usually comes with higher budgets was likely the best path forward here.

As for the movie itself, I'm catiously optimistic. I know a lot of people are not big fans of Discovery, but the show has had its share of highlights too (e.g., the much more favorably received Strange New Worlds is a spin-off of Season 2 after all). I've also always enjoyed a good spy story, and while we've been teased with the Obsidian Order, Tal Shiar/Zhat Vash, and Starfleet Intelligence/Section 31 story elements in past shows, we really haven't had a heavy focus on that side of Trek. I've generally enjoyed it when Trek has gone there in the past (DS9's "In the Pale Moonlight" and the early Worf/Raffi arc of Picard Season 3 are good examples of the potential here), so the idea of going deeper into that world has potential. It will just come down to the execution, which we'll just have to wait and see.

At least on a positive note, with streaming services as a whole looking to cut costs right now, the announcements of renewals of everything except Picard and Discovery, a new Starfleet Academy show and now this Section 31 movie is at least a positive sign that Star Trek is resistant to this trend. The fact that Section 31 is coming out as a movie also potentially leaves room for another TV show if Paramount is comfortable with the current Star Trek schedule flow, which could be a potential Star Trek: Legacy show (which for me is less exciting a prospect now unless they resurrect Shaw) or possibly something else.

This just screams meh to me.

The fandom has responded to a Matalas style Neo-Trek, and this wreaks of Kurtzman just being himself, by doubling down on a formula that simply doesn't work. Fans responded to Pike because Anson Mount is just that good of an actor. He preserved the essence of a character we only saw for two episodes in the prime universe and expanded on it.

While I've watched Discovery it's not a series that I ever get overly excited about although I will say jumping forward in time helped things a little. At least then they're not asking me to suspend disbelief, by making the ships technology look more modern, than the versions that we see 10 years later in the prime timeline. Followed up by radical departures from the standard fleet designs of the era.

So, in conclusion. I'd rather see this movie's budget be reallocated to more Trek the fans have actually RESPONDED to instead of spending it on this. Michelle Yeoh is a great actress, but Matalas needs another series and should honestly be running Trek moving forward.

I was actually pleasantly surprised to see this announced, I didn't really think those tightwads at Paramount would write an Oscar-sized check for her.

I am not worried too much at this point about 'omg Discovery again', because wasn't she getting shipped off to some suitable time, not necessarily with SuperBurnham around.

I'm not sure exactly what did it, but the last season of Picard, wow, I got up to episode 7 I think, and they were just too far out into unbelievable mishmosh and cheap pull-at-your-heartstrings manufactured drama. SNW sortof eased that, but it looks like it might be a losing battle. A movie would be interesting.
