I thought I'd share; you know it's the darndest thing - one minute, you can't find the hours to do anything, and the next (whilst playing Total War Warhammer III), you decide to convert your old at-home office back into a Warhammer miniature painting desk and pick up a hobby you put down almost 30 years ago.

I haven't painted since I was 17, and the last thing I painted was some clumsy Dwarf fleets for Games Workshop's "Man'O'War" game. (They certainly looked like a Dwarf warrior had thrown some paint at them...)

With the invention of the Internet, YouTube tutorials, and an absolute determination to make some time, I have picked up the brushes again. I am starting from the basic beginner level - so much to learn though!

I have a Dungeon and Dragons Army Painter starter kit with some models to practice before I attempt my new Dwarfen, The Old World, battalion.

Here's a look at my first day (be nice ) - I had forgotten how much my hand still shakes, although this Dwarf cleric is much smaller than a Warhammer mini, so I hope that it will get easier once I turn my hand to them; these are just practice pieces after all. This is just a base coat and a metal wash - highlights and face still to come. (And yes, there is another Dwarf model behind the cleric who is in a less than clerical pose - and needed to have his excitement censored a bit... my nephew thought it was funny, so he 3D printed it.. kids!)





Anyhow, as I progress, I will upload a photo here occasionally to share the journey. It's nice to have some practical - non-gaming hobbies. Anyone else paint? Got any tips? lol

I collect 40K Imperial Guard (Adeptus Militarum now) and Inquisition/Grey Knights.

Now I've got my own house and have some space, it's something I intend to pick up again. I've got over a hundred miniatures to remove the old black undercoat on, and paint in my scheme. All undercoated by me probably 15-20 years ago.
And a lot more models to make.

Tips for painting - it's not a race. Take your time. Enjoy the process. If your hand hurts, STOP, there's always tomorrow. Spray paint in whatever main colour your scheme is to save time (a cheat on my Imperial Guard - so many models! So I've opted for a basic colour scheme - it may not work for you).

Thanks for the advice Bedders - I've always been Warhammer Fantasy based, I think the release of The Old World inspired me to take a look again. The rule of "two thin coats" is well drummed into me.

Spray paint in whatever main colour your scheme is to save time

This saved me so much time on my Ultramarines.
Spray blue, use a wash to fill dark recesses, then start applying shades of blue to restore colour and add highlights.

Oh, hey! Mini painting! I don’t really have minis to paint, but I certainly do appreciate the art of bringing those little models to life. Got some friends that do it to bring to 40K games for their armies. Pretty amazing what you can do with so little.

Thank you! I use airbrushes. I have a hate hate relationship with them as they're so tricky to get right. I take my hat off to those folks who can use whatever paint brand they like and get the dilution and application spot on each time.
