Advice for new Warbird to buy/use

For a while now I used my Falchion warbird to burn Borg to a crisp. It works decently but looks like the flying brick it is. I've never been fond of the design or the ship itself for that matter. But battlecruiser warbirds are hard to come by and those that perform adequately are even worse.

That being said, it's time for a switch again. I do have the Vastam, but I am not that happy with the looks either (recognize a trend here already?). My favorite from the looks is probably the Aelhal, I am not sure about its performance though. If I fork over 30 bucks it should better be able to turn Borg cubes into drifting hunks of metal without any trouble.

Otherwise I'd probably had to fall back to the escort style warbirds, and that would hurt. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the looks of the Arkif and Talvath, but I am simply not able to play the hit and run style very well, I am only a mediocre flyer and prefer to orbit something while shooting it full of burning plasma.

To give a comparison of my old Fed toon, I flew the Avenger and tac Odyssey for ages and loved them. Perfectly tailored to my style of play.

Soo... any advice? Is the Aelhal a decent ship for my purposes? Does the lack of a forth tac console hurt?

The 4th tac console won't be making you hurt too badly, but one ship that I've heard nothing but good things about is the Vastaam. It looks badass, it has a hangar, versatile boff layout, 4 tac consoles, and a pretty swanky set of abilities baked into the ship itself. The trait that it comes with is superb and very useful (Reduced cooldown on all capt abilities).

I fly the presidio when I'm in the mood for something a bit more tanky. Let me know if you'd like to see a build.

Aelahl should both perform nicely in the orbital siege platform role, but it's not going to be a silly DPS monster. The dropped tac console hurts but the biggest downside is the weaker tac boff seats. Should still be able to do 30K-40k if you fly it right.

-Meh build is kinda flexible, depends on how much you push ze build... I can solo Tac cubes on advanced and Elite difficulties... and absorb point blank Crystaline bursts... while still laying down both fair amount of DPS (Beams + platforms), plus throwing an AoE Heal every now and then~

I do have the Vastam already (and the science version as well, I wanted those wings). My problem with the Vastam is again one of aesthetics: the wings are too high on the hull and most of the hull below the wings looks rather too bulky compared to the rest of the ship, as if the wings were attached by some sort of duct-tape quickfix repair job.

Yeah I know, I do have issues

I quickly whipped up a BOff setup for the Fleet Aelhal. I can work with the tac slots with no problem, there is one or two too many eng slots on it however and I'm not sure how to use them properly. I don't have any of the crazy expensive DOffs anyway.

The Aelhal is slightly outclassed by the Vastam because of that seat layout. The inability to field OSS1/OSS2 without sacrificing Sci is very annoying, practically negating the only advantage it has. It's obviously weaker than the Scimitar family, but you knew that.

You could always hold out for incoming ships, you know.

Anyway...

Unless you're using DEM for Marion-related purposes, DEM3 is definitely not worth the slot. AtSIF3 is the best Cdr Eng ability outside of specialized cases. I'd drop DEM entirely in favor of picking up RSP1, and ideally dropping Sci Team to pick up OSS2.

That should be better both offensively and defensively - it does leave you annoyingly vulnerable to placates and confuses, but those don't actually occur all that frequently. Only the Borg Queen and the Vaadwaur actually come to mind, and while the former will Confuse the latter just Placates.

Yeah, I can't afford Marion. I am actually using AtSIF3 for most of my Cmdr-Eng-slots right now, no idea why I changed it there *scratches head* I blame the lack of coffee this morning!

I also took a look at the new D'D variant, it also only has 3 tac consoles, but a slightly better BOff layout. It's another space brick though, as far as I can see.

All other options for me include getting to terms with cannons/DBB and grabbing the nifty Arkif. It looks awesome, but I have no idea if I can manage the flying this time around...

Other than that I have to wait for new relases, yeah. You're right there, Dark. But who knows which ships are next? Or I go back and upgrade my old Haakona to T5-U and play true block of concrete in space

Since we're talking about a broadsiding Faeht... does it make sense to build a broadsiding Ar'kif, Morrigu or Talvath too? Basically all the escort-style warbirds.

I run my faeht as a dbb warbird. She has marion.. (Lucky..she got him when he was 20 mil and I had just made some cash right before.).

You can get the Marion alternative (Phemenne) for pretty cheap at the moment.

If you are considering a beamscort, look no further than the sci pilot escort whose name I'm forgetting. You have some pretty incredible features packed in that thing.

No I use the Faeht as a frontal DPS ship which also works very nicely as a beamboat. The Onmi-Directional beams allow me to spam my Gravimetric torpedo whilst having most of my beams firing forwards with the exception of the standard array in the aft slot which is use to short up DPS when I move to broadside my targets.

The build has proven extremely effective
