Hi all
I have just downloaded STO and am looking forward to starting the tutorial.
I came across your community page while looking for new bro guides advice etc.
I am looking for a laid back group of people to play with as well as do some SOLO activity with no penalties. Just wanting to be a casual player, take RL first , and not make this game a job. I have found from past experience playing MMO's that the games are more enjoyable if you have a great group of people to play with. I am hoping to find such a group , especially as a new player.
I am in the U.S. CST -6 timezone.
Any advice or pointers you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Hiya!
I think you have found the right place! It's quite active both here and in the game. Everyone is very friendly, willing to help you out with whatever you need help with.
There are regular events scheduled if you feel like playing with other members or, in game, you can just ask and most times members are willing to team up or help with anything! If you want to play solo, which I often do because of my TZ, you can do that too.
Overall it is quite a laid back group!
Hopefully you decide to join!

What Seven said - I almost entirely solo, except for doing TFOs (Task Force Operations, basically small raids) in PUGs (Pick-Up Groups). I just chat occasionally on the armada channel, or post here from time to time. There's absolutely no pressure for me to group, attend fleet events, anything. Although I keep meaning to try one of our themed events.

Welcome to UFPlanets! I hope you find your stay here enjoyable, this community covers everything from casual play to hardcore endgame stuffs in Star Trek Online. We have a wealth of knowledge in the forum of guides and helpful tidbits of information in the forums here.
We also host regular weekly events in Star Trek Online if you would like to attend those once you've gotten to grips with the game. For now my advice would be to play through the tutorial, the game has a fair amount to offer while levelling up

Welcome! Advice for a new player... based on my own experience (started early last year):
Work your way through the episode (quest) chains, in the order you (will) see them on the left. Most of them have quite interesting story lines and some of them make little sense when you play them out of order. By just using the gear and ships you pick up doing that, you should be able to easily hit the level cap well before you are done.
Second: don't spend much time worrying about your gear (or ships) until you do hit the level cap (or at least the highest tier of ships) - you will out level stuff so quick, there is no point in fretting over optimal gear until then. I wish I had realized that earlier, I spent way too much time fretting over which ship to get, only to move up to the next one, two days later Just replace things when you get a better piece from a quest or a random drop.

It's 100% up to you on how you'd like to experience our community. We have a good mix of members here with plenty that also are casual. The only requirement for membership is to sign a roll call every 3 months other then that, you can decide how much or little you'd like to be involved in any area here

To become a member (officer) you can submit an application here. You would need to be a member before you could be invited into our fleets.
